Part time masters and 30 hours free childcare

Hi there

I am planning to start a part time masters in psychology course, I will also be working self employed for 16 hours per week.

Will I still be able to get the 30 hours free childcare in September?

Thanks!
Sophie

Hi Sophie,

This is a tricky one! I've asked a retired childminder in my family and they didn't know, so I would advise looking on the Gov.uk site if you haven't already. You can also look at help with childcare while you study, Learner Support, and the Advanced Learner Loan. Sorry I don't have a concrete answer but hopefully these help! Maybe also consider reaching out to your university to see if they can offer any advice, guidance or support?

Hi SophieAmelie,

Sorry I don't have a definite answer either for you, which I know you probably won't want to hear, but I did an internet search and there is a helpline set up by the HMRC to answer queries about your eligibility to claim the free 30 hours of childcare - here is the link to the webpage that has the contact details: https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/hm-revenue-customs/contact/childcare-service-helpline.
It seems that your income also impacts your eligibility so it would probably be best to give them a call. Also, have you enquired with the finance department at either the university you are going to be studying at, or on the Student Room - you could pop your question over to their forum and I'm sure that they would be able to advise you or at least find out who could help you,
Sorry I can't help you better, but I hope you manage to sort it out, if you have any other queries, just ask!
