Transfer to Computer Art BA Portsmouth University, is it worth it?

Hi everyone! I want to transfer to Portsmouth University for a BA in Computer Art and I would like to know a bit about the course: how are the teachers, lectures and seminars; what are your projects like or if there are any exams; if you do game jams and overall how you feel about your growth as an artist; etc. Right now I am doing a BA in Games Art and Design at NUA (I am Y1) but I am not happy with the course structure or my teachers. 🙁

Hello! Sorry to hear you aren't having a great time at NUA. What is it about the course structure and teaching that you were struggling with?

I know a few people that studied at Portsmouth for Game Design and Game Audio. I know they run game jams within the department as a whole so i'm sure you would have those opportunities. These people placed here at my studio for their placement year which to me usually indicates a good standard of teaching! As often placement students come from the same few well-performing universities - typically they have the skills to be able to do the job and have been encouraged to apply by their academic staff, which reflects well on the standard of the university.

Looking at the computer arts course information online it seems you will be assessed by exams but also coursework, presentations, and essays. I would anticipate the bulk of that to be coursework related but might be worthwhile contacting them for more information on how that's structured.
They have a great range of facilities - mocap and photogrammetry equipment is really cool to have the opportunity to experiment with on a student level.

My only concern is there's a really really small range of student work available to look at linked on their course information. It links through to their 2024 showcase which has a handful of poorly edited screenshots from what looks to be the whole games department - definitely a bad reflection given the standard of their course seems quite high (?) a strange decision on their part. I would be looking at trying to go for an open day/contact them directly asking for more clear examples of recent student work so you can get a grasp for the standard of work they are producing from their graduates.
@University of Portsmouth Student Rep I wonder if you have any more information on where you might be able to find recent examples of student work?
