Wanting to do an apprenticeship but told I’m too old?

Hi

I have recently left a job in childcare that I didn’t like but found what I do want to do so am still glad I had the job because of that, I want to do an apprenticeship in business administration but my family are saying I’m too old I’m 28 and then say employers only want 18&19 year olds? Also they’ve told me I have no chance as I don’t have good GCSE’s.

I wanted to ask if any of this is true will I struggle to get an apprenticeship at my age and with poor GCSE’s? I do have higher qualifications then GCSE’s I have a level 3 in childcare and a level 6 diploma in animal welfare.

They are wrong. I’m a similar age, however I do have decent GCSEs and a levels. I have multiple offers for degree apprenticeships for very competitive schemes. Having no relevant experience at all.

Please don’t listen to them and just apply to schemes where you meet the requirements! You can always pop me a message if you need help with your cv etc.

Good luck!

Hi , thank you so much for your reply , I can't PM yet so will have to post here. I've found a few apprenticeships in my area that I like they do all say GCSEs are desirable but not essential as those who don't meet the GCSE requirements will do functional skills instead. I've found one I really love at my old collage do you have any advice for my cover letter? How I can explain why I'd be right for the post, should I include that I have a lot of respect for the collage and was a former pupil who loved my time there and it would be a dream to work for them as it would I couldn't believe it when I saw the post?

Hey,

I’ve just messaged you on here. Hopefully you can reply?

Awww that’s brilliant! I thought so, and yeah I would definitely include that in your cover letter! It really demonstrates that you genuinely want and would not just quit the role after 6 months.

But you also want to include the skills and experience you have that makes you suitable for the role. It should say more about this in the advert, but normally it’s communication skills, organisation etc. and as a mature applicant this is where we can stand out! As even if you don’t have work experience you have plenty of life experience to share. Make sure to share specific examples here.

If you send over the job advert privately I can give more specifics, and I’m more than happy to review your cover letter for you (I can send over my email you can send it to).

If it makes any difference, my best mate’s partner is a trainee apprentice (she’s 25). So I don’t imagine it would be too big a jump or deal to consider a 28 year old to say the least (I’m saying no you are not too old).

She’s a trainee apprentice biomedical scientist. Translation, she’s doing a degree and working as an Associate Practitioner at the same time.
