Help with durham colleges

I recently received an offer from Durham for BSC Biological Sciences and now I have to allocate my colleges. Obviously they are just preferences and so no means guaranteed.

I would preferably like a Hill college that is catered. This means my options are Collingwood, Grey, Marys, Trevs, Aidans and Mildert. I’m also not that fussed about en suite vs. standard. I would also describe myself as extroverted and I like going out lots and hope to make lots of friends

My current thinking is:
1. marys
2. grey
3. mildert
4. collingwood
5. johns
6. trevs
7. hatfield
8. cuthberts
9. john snow
10. south
11. jobo
12. stephs
13. chads
14. castle
15. aidans
16. hild and bede

My thinking for this particular order is that I liked Mary’s (despite the lack of a nice bar area) but it’s very oversubscribed so my next two are ones I definitely like less but would be okay with going to.

Greys would be good because of its location as it’s very nearby to biology and there was nothing overly wrong with it (apart from living up to the stereotype of grey by, name grey by nature because it was very ‘vanilla’ and had no particularly interesting bits)

I also contemplated putting collingwood first because IMO it had the best facilities compared to any other college by a country mile. However, (no matter how hard I try) I’m just not that good at team sports and so I was worried that I wouldn’t fit in quite right as that’s a big part of collingwood.

I also acknowledge that by not putting it first there is no chance I will get a place (the same being for the other popular ones that aren’t in my top 3)

I know that no one would be able to tell me exactly which I should put where and even if they did there is no guarantee that I would even be allocated that college, but does anyone see any obvious faults in this order or any alternatives?

Also, forgot to say that I went to Durham yesterday for the Post offer day and I liked it a lot and visited Mary’s, Collingwood, Van Mildert, Trevs and Grey. I liked Mary’s and Collingwood the most and Trevs and Van Mildert the least.

Hi I’m in a similar position also trying to rank after yesterday! I didn’t get to visit Collingwood but I’d have liked to. Why do you have it lower than Mildert if you liked it second best?

with colleges like mary’s and collingwood and castle ect (which are so oversubscribed) there is no chance you’ll get it unless you put it first (and even then there is a 1/5 chance) so it’s basically wasted unless it’s the first choice. but because i still liked it i still decided to put it relatively high even though because it’s not first i won’t stand a chance

Yh it’s not easy! I loved Chads but it’s just so popular and such a high proportion are reallocated it’s putting me off. Equally liked Mary’s but the chances there of ending up with it only seem slightly better! I’m considering putting Hatfield 1st as the odds seem better and everyone seemed so nice there not at all the negative stereotypes

Yeah that’s a very good tactic, I’m thinking about putting a college with better odds too. LMK what you end up going with x

Although realistically Castle and Chads need to be first to have a chance, both Collingwood and Mary’s do tend to allocate spaces to 2nd preferences - it will depend on your position in the draw and subject/fee status.

From my understanding of what you posted, I would put St Mary’s and Collingwood at the top of your list. It might also be worth putting Hatfield above John’s as it so small your very unlikely to get allocated it if it’s outside your top 2 possibly 3.

That’s a good idea, thanks!
