Idk what to do

Hi

So my parents have decided that I'll get no financial support from them when I put them both down on my sfe

I want to do pharmacy and I also booked an ensuited accom at Notts and my parents never mentioned this before but now they are.

I dont know what I'm going to do im stressing and freaking out because idk what to do if I get thr minimum that won't be near enough to cover my rent.

Even if I change accommodation it wouldn't be near enough idk how to I have to go uni I just if feels like that's impossible now
Hey @21sparkserrol,

I am so sorry to hear your concerns around the cost of accommodation and affording it.
Accommodation is often the most expensive outgoing for students who move away for university.
Firstly, it is important that you have had this conversation with your parents and know this in advance and that you are aware of the associated costs for your accommodation.
Have you applied for Student Finance England yet and received the forecasted amount you will receive for your maintenance loan?
It may be worth considering this amount and how much money your accommodation will cost. It is definitely worth considering alternative accommodation options and see if the short fall feels somewhat easier or less?

If you are in year 13, your summer break before starting university will be longer than you have ever experienced before and a lot of students will use this period to get a part time or full time work to earn some money and save up before starting university.

So many university students across the UK take up part time work whilst they are at university. At University of Leicester we have lots of different areas across the university where we employ students and so I anticipate that Nottingham will be similar, but as Nottingham is based in a city like Leicester, there will be businesses and companies that you could get part time work to subsidise some of your costs whilst you study.

Finally, I wanted to suggest that you explore the University's scholarship and bursary offering. Sometimes these are automatically awarded if you chose to share your details with the university when you apply for Student Finance but some of them you actively have to apply for and meet certain criteria. What is great about ALL scholarships and bursaries is that these are non repayable and so free money!
There is a good website I have shared below that pulls together extra funding in one location and so considering what extra funding you could be eligible for would we a worthy investment of your time and research before considering your next steps such as cheaper accommodation: https://www.thescholarshiphub.org.uk/

This website is also aimed to support students with their money management: https://www.blackbullion.com/

I would encourage you to finally look in to what support is more broadly available from your university, here at University of Leicester we have a cost of living hub and we outline all of the support available for our students!

Best of luck

I'm sorry to hear this! Is this because they can't afford to help or just won't? If it's because they can't afford to help, student finance is based on your parents wages so if they're on a lower wage you will qualify for the maximum maintenance loan which will go a long way, you could top this off with a part time job in Nottingham. Good luck I hope it works out for you

It's like we have the exact same life, i want to do the same course as u and won't receive any help from my parents, and on top of everything I'll be receiving only minimum sfe. I guess ill just juggle part time jobs at uni unfortunately :frown:
