bio chem and welsh bacc as a-levels for dentistry

i plan on applying for dentistry and im currently doing bio chem psych and welsh bacc a levels and im doing well in all but my psychology grades aren't looking good so far (i've been predicted a B at most) and i just wanted to ask if you guys have gotten into dentistry schools (or even if anyone you know has) with just bio chem and welsh bacc because i know some if not most unis accept welsh bacc as a third a-level but idk if they prefer actual subjects like maths, psych etc etc over welsh bacc if that makes sense.. if it helps my top 3 choices for unis (for now) are cardiff, bristol and plymouth.. thank you so much!!

I've had a look at each of those 3 Dental schools for you where Welsh Bacc counts as an A level.
Please read the Dental Schools Council booklet for information for each dental school btw- you can then check if other schools accept Welsh Bacc . Liverpool is okay, but Leeds for example says contact them for advice on other qualifications
Presumably you are resident in Wales? That gives you contextual status for a Cardiff application, which is a huge help.
As for a B- unless contextual, or applying for a Foundation Year, I think all courses are AAA minimum. But surely it's too early in Y12 for predictions? And you have the 3 other subjects to get the As.
Good luck!

thank you so much!! also just out of curiosity, do dental schools accept more "respected"/relevant subjects (i.e. psych, maths, physics etc etc) over more random subjects (i.e. textile design, hsc, art, rs etc.) as a third subject or is it literally just that the third subject doesn't really matter as long as its an A.
also about your question for predictions; in wales (or atleast for wjec), we sit our as exams the first year and i've been told that if your grades are bad for the first year and you resit then that doesn't look good when applying for uni and stuff but yeah

I don't honestly know about subject preferences, but I think most Dental schools only specify 2 of the subjects. I think Dentistry is better off with a range of people with different interests. I would have thought an top grade in a subject that requires hand skills like Art, Textiles would bode well because the job includes a type of healthcare plumbing/carpentry/design/artistry/problem solving, as well as needing to be patient. compassionate and care about people's wellbeing. Understanding and being able to communicate with people is key. Psychology is certainly a good choice.

Hi there!

Awesome to hear you're interested in Cardiff! And I totally get the struggle with Psychology A Level haha - I did this as well and its definitely a tough subject!

In terms of requirements, from my personal experience and hearing from friends, Cardiff is generally pretty upfront on their grade requirements! There's no hidden secrets or anything like that - what they put up on their website is a pretty realistic representation on what the admissions team will accept. I'd say that I know non-dentistry students who have gotten into Cardiff with the Welsh bacc or BTEC, so taking alternatives to A-Levels isn't uncommon. The university itself says that they accept the Welsh bacc as an equivalent to one A Level if that helps!

Of course, my personal experience hasn't been directly related to dentistry, so if you want a solid answer I'd definitely recommend contacting our admissions team, they'd be more than happy to help!
