EPQ - Sciences

How would an EPQ help me in the future ? Like I think I would use it for showing time management and such on personal statement?

Ive almost completed my research project for UCLans Scholars programme and am debating Cambridge's HE project for a academic poster type thing?

Problems:
How time consuming is it? I already volunteer on the weekend and I don't want to feel even more drained on Sundays.
Format - I am not keen on doing the 5K essay but since doing a science related one how would I do an artefact or an experiment because I think I might do an experiment.

Topics - I might do one on immunology or something to do with stains but not sure how to incorporate other things in. Or might make a 3D model for research or something?

Is it worth doing?

Hi @fullofregrets

I did an EPQ during Year 13. I think the biggest benefit for me was the opportunity to develop my academic writing skills including writing an essay, referencing and organisation of work. These skills have been really helpful at university. Some unis may also give you a reduced offer if you do an EPQ, however this is not the case everywhere. Another positive was that I really enjoyed having the opportunity to research something that I was interested in.

It can be quite time consuming, however if you plan it out and keep on top of it, it is manageable. I planned what I was going to do each week so that I was not left with loads to do close to the deadline.

Hope that helps!

Sophie.
