should i drop out

so uhm i am currently first year of my law degree, i also took a gap year before i began meaning i finished school in 2023. i took my gap year to give me some time to think of what i wanted to study, however it just made me feel more like i am out of time (stupid i know.) anyway i decided to give law a try although i’ve never had any interest but thought it might grow on me (i’m also doing law with criminology which influenced me further) first year is nearly over and i’m realising law is not for me but i feel stupid for nearly completing a whole year just to drop out.

i am really thinking of doing biomed which is completely different from law but i have always been more interested in medicine related courses anyway (i did health and social care at college also) due to the subjects i have done previously i would more likely than not need to do a foundation year of biomed and therefore do 4 full years and this is why i am very unsure if it is worth it. i have always had the worry of being behind than my other classmates which i know is not a massive issue in uni but it is a personal worry that i have.

so has anyone being in a similar position? should i just stick to law for the rest of my 2 years and scrap it all for 4 years of a new course???

If you are not enjoying your course, I suggest that you switch to a course which you are likely to enjoy. If this means dropping out and starting again at the same university or another university, do that. Good luck!

On a more general point, If you have time could you please very kindly share the reasons why you have found the study of law not to be your thing? I ask this because, by doing so, you might assist others who currently think that they wish to study law, but might find out that it's not for them.

Some students could avoid a lot of frustration further down the line if they had a clearer view of what it's like to study law (and also of how hard it is to obtain a training place in a law firm or a set of chambers).

To be blunt, way too many people are studying law at present, and it would be no bad thing, for the happiness of students and the wider good of society, to encourage some students to look at other paths. We have plenty of lawyers. I suggest that we could do with more doctors, scientists, engineers, teachers, journalists, creatives, you name it.
