Criminology at LHU

Criminology students at Liverpool Hope study how crime is defined and who defines it, why some people commit offences and what happens to those who commit crimes if they are caught. It's a very popular degree at Hope and its based at our main teaching campus, Hope Park, which is 4 miles from the city centre.

Criminology is offered as a Single Honours degree and as a Combined Honours degree. It is offered combined with a lot of subjects including Drama, Law, Psychology and Social Care. You can find more information about the course on our website.

We spoke to one of our Lecturers in Criminology, Gavin Hart, and asked him some questions about Criminology at Liverpool Hope.
1. What is it like for students to study Criminology at Liverpool Hope?
Students get to tackle some of the really big philosophical questions about why people commit crimes. They also dive into some of the grim details associated with various types of criminality. Its hard work but also fun!

2. What do you love about the subject that you teach?
I love Criminology because it makes us look into the dark side of human behaviour and think about how we can challenge certain types of crime. It also forces us to think carefully about power in society. Who makes the rules? Who suffers? Should we change what is or is not criminal in the first place? These ae the kind of questions we engage with on a regular basis as criminologists.

3. What makes studying Criminology at Liverpool Hope different to any other university in the UK?
My team. You will not find a bunch of more committed professionals who genuinely care about your academic and personal development more than the criminology team at Liverpool Hope. I am biased, but I'm right!
