I'm a mature student who wants to change careers, I am looking for advice on how to go about this, I haven't got a degree, I have go many years of experience in management, is it possible to do a Psychology degree with a foundation year?

Hi @Loobie1065 😊

I'm a mature student too, and currently studying BSc Psychology and Criminology.

To get back to education I did an Access to HE course, this might be worth a look into as I found this really helpful for getting back into academic writing, generally getting used to education again and I felt like it really set me ahead for when I started my degree! I'd already had a year of writing essays again and was feeling super ready for the next steps.
I did Access to HE in Social Sciences 😊 To find out more about this having a search on Google of the colleges surrounding you would be a good start.

Studying a BSc Psychology course with a Foundation Year is also a great option as you mention, particularly for getting used to education again. You would need some UCAS points to get into this still so this would depend on what qualifications you already have, such as A-Levels or something equivalent.
To have a search of different universities which offer Psychology with a Foundation Year have a search on UCAS (linked here), and make sure you find a course which is accredited by the BPS.

Good luck with your career change!

Hi Loobie1065

At York St John we have a large mature student community - at undergraduate level, 20% of our students are mature students. I study Psychology (currently in second year) and I know of a few mature students on my course who have had extra arrangements for them to fit their timetable around other commitments such as childcare. We have specific support for mature students (linked here) which includes specific induction sessions for mature students, study help and advice sessions.

We also have a mature students' entry offer scheme (linked here) which may appeal to you - if your application is successful, it means you wouldn't have to go through a foundation year and can just go straight to the BSc Psychology course! The university will ask you for a short personal statement (250-500 words), asking why you are passionate about Psychology and any experience you might have (management is definitely a great place to start with this - there's lots of resources online that offer guidance on how to tailor your experience towards Psychology - I'd always be happy to help with this too!) If your application gets accepted, you're in! The university will help you make an application through UCAS, help you make a student loan application, and discuss with you the different ways they can help you through your university experience. If they think your application is not strong enough, they will suggest you our foundation year, or an access course.

If you're particularly interested in completing a foundation year, we have one of those too! (linked here). I'd highly suggest reading our guide to higher education for mature learners (linked here, and if this link doesn't work you can access it through the support for mature students page) which can provide guidance on topics such as finance and mature learner grants, commuting, digital training and more!

If you have any more questions I'd be happy to share my experiences on the Psychology course, and if you have any questions about our support for mature learners I'll happily email the relevant teams to find our for you.
Hope this helped!
