Recently Married - Why is my wife's finance taken into consideration when she is not

Stupid Question i know.

I married after being a widow. My son is not financially tied to my wife and I would never expect her to take on a financial support role for my son. Why would her financial income be detrimental to his student loans?

As SF require her income, his loan amount has reduced to the point where i'm struggling and even whilst he's working, rents are astronomical as well as the cost of living etc but this seems unfair unless i'm missing anything.

Is anyone else in this situation?

I get the frustration as I've had similar problems but the guidelines assume all people in the household are responsible for the applicant and they also assume that parents will help out. Like most people I'm aware that's not always the case but calling up is pointless as you'll get the same generic answer. You're 100% right it's not fair, your son could try appeal the process but it's not always a guarantee that it'll work
It's a ludicrous system. I moved into my own house that I owned, 4 days before my 19th birthday. My fiancé at the time lived with me (but it was my house).

1 year and 9 months later (so three months before I was 21) I started uni... and my mother's financial details were still required.

Utterly bonkers. I had been supporting myself for nearly 2 years, but they didn't care.

Marriage is based on two becoming one financially, both while you’re together and also if you split up. So not to be entered in to lightly. I am inclined to think that student finance arrangements are bonkers though
