Wednesday socials in university

what are Wednesday socials - what do you do? is it something that is part of a specific society in uni or is it something anyone can join? if so, how do you join societies?

Hi @Teya4,

Universities try to ensure that students' schedules are clear on a Wednesday afternoon for them to be able to participate in clubs and societies.

This initiative usually takes place across the sector to ensure universities can compete with one another.

You can contact your Students' Union to learn more about the clubs and societies at your university.

Hi there!

As Leanne has said, often Universities will try and keep schedules clear on a Wednesday afternoon for sports societies.

There are also often socials on a Wednesday evening for lots of different societies, mostly sports societies. They will often dress up and go out on a Wednesday which is student night. Here at Hallam we have Hallamnation on a Wednesday where all the sports societies go out usually in fancy dress and there is a bit of a bar crawl and then ends up in a club in town. It's a great night and loads of Universities do similar so I would recommend joining a society if this sounds like something you would enjoy!

I would have a look at the societies that your Uni offers. Have a look online as there will often be a list of societies on there and you can see if there are any that you might be interested in. There will probably be quite a lot so it's a good idea to have a look first before Uni starts!

At the freshers fair in September there will be lots of different stands for all of the sports teams and societies. Go to this and talk to anyone from the teams you might be interested in and get some more information. You can usually do a trial session to see if you like it before you commit so maybe go to a few of these too.

With sports teams, there will usually be different teams for different abilities. Some are competitive and some are more social so it depends whether you have done the sport before or if you are trying something new - either is fine! For the competitive teams there will likely be trials to see what team you would be in.

If you have any more specific questions, I am sure the student union would be able to answer them either via email or on the phone.

I hope some of this helps!

Hi @Teya4

As mentioned, Wednesday afternoons are often kept free on most students timetables to allow for sports and societies to meet up.

Societies are an amazing way to meet new people and they are ideal as the people there will share the same interest as you! I have met some really good mates from football and the socials where we meet up with other sports teams! Getting involved in whatever you can is my best advice for starting uni. Even if its not quite your thing, it makes it a whole lot easier to meet people and settle into uni life.

Your uni will hold a freshers fair in the first couple weeks of you starting where you can sign up to however many clubs or societies that you want to. There are often group chats for the clubs and they will put the theme of the social on there for the evening. Wednesdays nights are always a good laugh out at uni as all the different sports team tend to go to the same clubs/pubs so its another perfect opportunity to meet new people!

As mentioned aswell, you should be able to contact your student union to enquire about anything you would like to know and there should be a list of all societies and clubs offered by the uni on their website!

Good luck with starting uni, let me know if you have any other questions, I am more than happy to help!

Thanks, Matt 🙂
