English Literature and language A level NEA

Hi guys, I'm currently in year 12 and about to start my NEA for english lit lang, but i'm stuck on what book to choose. I was thinking about doing George Orwell 1984 for my fiction text but i'm kinda in two minds about it, I also have no clue about what non-literary material to use. Some recomendations of texts or any useful tips would be great.
Thanks

Your best bet for non-lit is to go for a political speech when doing 1984 as the speeches tend to show power, control, and influence. I've heard good things about a person using Obama's speech after they killed Osama bin Laden, but there are plenty of similar historical speeches. Just make sure that your non-lit material has had a lot of people talk about it so that you can include sources to support your analysis (I learnt that the hard way). Good luck!

Hey it really depends on firstly what theme you want to do if you’re unsure about doing 1984, for instance for my coursework I did ‘perfume’ by Patrick Suskind for the theme of obsession. For my non literary text I did a collection of love letters from John Keats to Brawne about their obsessive love. I really enjoyed doing both texts. Another text my friend did was birdsong which is based on war in order to explore trauma. I hope this gives you some ideas or atleast a starting point to find out what you are actually interested in doing.

Thanks that does help, i was thinking of focusing on the theme of control and how the government uses it to sway people into believing in certain ideologies, do you think that would fit with 1984 or should i choose a different book

I’ve read a bit of 1984 and I think that would that would be a good theme as every aspect of their lives are controlled in 1984.It would probably help aswell to read it before you choose your non- literary text in order to see if it has similar linguistic techniques to 1984. I looked it up and another book that has the theme of control that you might be interested in is the giver by louis Lowry if your still uncertain, it could be good to look into what it’s about

hey, I'm also in yr12 doing NEA, just thought you should know that the example they showed us in class was exactly that comparison, so there could be a bias when marking maybe?
if control and power is something you're interested in maybe you could do the thirteen reasons why book- if you like teen or YA, or maybe something like Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier if you want more of a classic.
non- lit wise I'm personally doing 48 laws of power by Robert Greene so maybe something like that
Hope it helps, good luck! x
