Study Abroad Travel Grant and Turing

Hi,

I have applied and I would assume will be accepted for a Widening Participation Turing Grant from my University.

However I read that you cannot claim travel costs twice, so I'm wondering if I am able to claim Turing and the SFE Travel Grant at the same time?

As if i wasn't on a Widening Participation Grant, I'd assume I'd be able to claim for SFE Travel Grant instead alongside the Turing Grant which would be much more financially better for myself as I'm travelling all the way to South Korea.

My 'grant' for a WP Travel from Turing would only be £905. That wouldn't even cover one return flight compared to the SFE Travel Grant.

Can I have some of this cleared up a bit as I'm really confused on if I can apply for both at the same time, or if I can refuse the Travel Grant side of Turing and just use the Cost of Living side of it as the Travel Grant is honestly sort of useless for Turing. It would put me in a worse financial situation than if I was just to not have it at all.

Mainly
- Can you claim for the Cost of Living side of Turing and refuse to use the Travel Grant side of Turing
- If not, could you request to just have the normal grant without WP and use the Travel Grant SFE provides

Thanks

Hi there,

According to the rules we have you can apply for a Travel Grant with us, even if you also receive a Turing Grant.

So, if you're eligible we'll let you know once we have your application for the relevant year.

When does this take place, is it in the 25/26 year?

Thanks, Graeme

Yes. I have been accepted for my SFE application and awaiting the Course Abroad Form that I requested yesterday. Its just my University stated if you get accepted for the WP grant you cant also apply for the SFE Travel Grant as its already included with the grant but I would rather not even say I have any of the issues if that was the case as the grant isn't very good for travel to Korea :frown:

Looking at the rules we have it really doesn't look like that's a problem - as in, it says you can get the Travel Grant so long as it's a study abroad, or unpaid placement year.

If you want, you can try sending us a live chat on your account: https://www.gov.uk/student-finance-register-login

We can send a referral to the Travel Grant team and ask them to confirm this for sure .

Thanks, Graeme
