dentistry uni choices

is there any way that i can get to know the different types of teaching/curriculum styles that each dental school does? im trying to make my decisions on what unis to choose/apply for dentistry and im aware that i should choose unis based on what suits me best because all unis would essentially teach the same things (i.e. they're regulated by the GDC so same content and stuff). i can't find exactly how each uni approaches their content but i've heard a few things like for example plymouth is more patient centered than cardiff and things like that and that cardiff does a spiral curriculum etc. It is these kinds of details that I am looking for but I'm unable to find them (the ones that I do, I can't understand much of what it says 😭) but if anyone has any resource that sums it up/compares all dental unis please do let me know!! also any suggestions on what universities for dentistry are generally liked by dentistry students bc ik some unis have a bad reputation between the students and they may not always be true but im just curious

I think that during the application process you should choose the unis you are more likely to get an interview, check university’s selection for interviews and apply strategically. Then, when/if you get offers, use the teaching style, location, etc to choose between them.

Websites like medicmind, whatuni can give you more idea about each uni but you better read the university own website

Hiya!

Have you been to any open days? They're usually a great way to talk to staff and ask questions like these - though I totally understand you're giving up your time and travel for these things!

Another thing you could possibly try is reaching out to dentistry societies at your universities of interest! Committee members are usually very friendly and I'm sure they would be more than happy to give you some insight to the course. Cardiff's Dental Student Society for example, is at this link here. Alternatively, you could contact the admissions team of the universities you're interested in! If you wanted to know more about Cardiff's curriculum for example, you can ask the admissions team about it.

If you wanted to know about which dentistry schools are generally liked by students I really recommend having a look at Discover Uni, which is a website that compares student satisfaction ratings between universities. For example, the BDS Dental Surgery course here at Cardiff has a relatively high student satisfaction rate.

I hope that helps!

Hey there! 😊

As above, I also think open days are a great chance to ask these questions as it can give you an honest insight from current students, as well as information from staff and lecturers too.

You can also get a real feel for the teaching style by chatting to those at an open day as well as attending an offer holder day- these are the best chance to take part in subject-specific activities and interactive sessions to get an idea of how the course is run and taught and gives you a taste for what it's like to be a student at that university. 🙌

Our Plymouth dentistry thread might also give you an insight if you ask the same questions on there as current, past, and future students can input and give you some more information beyond the knowledge of a non-dentistry student like myself has 😁

Best of luck and feel free to reach out with any other questions! 👋
