Degree - teaching

Hey,
Just wanted to ask for some advice as I'm applying to university later this year.
I've always had a passion for teaching and would ideally want to go into teaching sixth form / secondary maths. However, I don't want to do a maths degree specifically.
On the other hand, I've been looking into midwifery as a second option.
I was wondering if I did a midwifery degree and changed my mind, would I still be able to go into teaching maths and get my PGCE secondary or not?

Thankyou

Hi @theatrical-arche

Great to hear you’re thinking ahead about your options. In general, it may depend slightly on the university, but I don’t see any reason why you couldn’t do a midwifery degree and then apply for a PGCE in Secondary Maths. For example, at LJMU, the PGCE requires a good degree (2.2 minimum), but is not subject specific. You’re assessed on the following:

Ability:

Depth of relevant subject knowledge

Potential to work effectively at Master’s level

Ability to work with others in teams

Ability to manage people and projects

Attitude:

Interest and enthusiasm for your chosen subject area

Ability to make learning exciting and meaningful for young people

Commitment to supporting learners, including in socially challenging contexts

Enthusiasm and resilience

Location: You’d need to live within reasonable travel distance of the university and its partner schools for the duration of the course.

Selection: The process includes an individual interview, and for certain subjects, there’s a written task too.

Most other universities will have a similar setup, but you might want to check each PGCE’s specific entry requirements to be sure.

Hope that helps 🙂
