Physics at University of Sheffield

Can anyone who is currently studying physics (any branch but mainly interested in astro) or has already completed a degree at Uni of Sheffield answer some questions for me?
My dream course is astrophysics at UoS, but I don't know anyone who's done the course themselves and want some honest feedback about the physics courses there.
1) Is it actually as competitive as everyone claims?
2) Are the modules (optional or not) fairly interesting and helpful?
3) How much free time do you have? Is having other hobbies/interests still realistic?
4) What does/did your typical day look like?
5) Any advice for people wanting to study the course/at the uni?
Any help would be appretiated, thank you for your time!

Hey, ketchupwater249, 👋

It's great to hear about your interest in the University of Sheffield! 👏

I'm not a physics student but I absolutely love the university. I did my BA and MA here and came back for my PhD. Sheffield is such a great place to be a student.

If you want to chat to a student ambassador who studies physics, follow this link to our Chat to Our Students Page. If you search 'Astrophysics', a relevant ambassador should pop up and you can then send them your course-specific questions.

If you have any questions about studying in Sheffield more generally, feel free to ask me here and I'll do my best to help too! 😄

All best wishes,
Phoebe 😃

Hi!! I'm on the straight physics course at Sheffield, I've just finished my first year and I chose some Astrophysics modules. I'm not sure on the competitiveness as I actually changed onto the physics course from a different degree at Sheffield, so my application was different, I do think it's supposed to be very good for astrophysics though, they offer a lot of optional modules in it for straight physics students and it seems like a big section of the department in terms of their research!

This year I did introduction to astrophysics, solar systems (which I'm not sure they're running next year), and our evolving universe from the astro options. I also chose a medical physics module but I think when you're on the dual course with astro you don't have an optional modules in the first year, they're all core. I really enjoyed them, I found them all very interesting but I think I liked intro to astro the most as it was more mathsy! I'd say the workload definitely allows for pursuing hobbies and interests in the evenings and at weekends, and everybody always has Wednesday afternoons free anyway.

The days vary across the week. Last year Monday was usually pretty full with lectures/problem classes, then I was in Tuesday mornings for computing session, and Wednesday mornings for labs. More lectures on Thursday and Friday but not as packed days as Monday, only a few lectures generally. Then also a 2 hour tutorial for the core physics module towards the end of the week. I personally really like Sheffield, I love the city and also being so close to the countryside. Let me know if you have any other questions!
