Told my application was withdrawn, but it wasn’t?

Hi, just wondering if anyone has experienced something similar to this?

I applied to the university of west London a few months ago and I just got a UCAS update to say my application is no longer being considered.

I assumed this was a rejection, so I went to check the student portal on their website and now I’m really confused.

Under application status it said:

“Withdrawn (before rejection)”

I never withdrew the application, so why does it say this?

I was having a few issues sending my portfolio over, but they emailed me to let me know and I cleared it up.
I had a notification on the portal to say that I needed to send a reference (I didn’t have one on my ucas application).
But I just thought I’d get round to that if I was offered a place.

I’m now thinking have they withdrawn the application because I didn’t provide a reference?
But why not email me about that?
Surely they should’ve at least tried to contact me if it was an issue?

Also considering I was in contact with the uni, I’m shocked they’ve just rejected the application on ucas instead of emailing me.
I know universities do this a lot, but it’s usually when they haven’t had any formal contact with you.

Has this happened to anyone else?

They did contact you, via the portal. You made the assumption you could just provide a reference after the fact (given most unis use references to give offers?), if anything you should have contacted them to clear it up.
They don’t have time to be chasing up every applicant it’s an easy rejection for them…

Did UCAS confirm you had submitted an application? Normally UCAS won't treat an application complete without personal statement and reference.
