Sheffield University Japanese Studies

Hii,

So I started studying Japanese at soas uni last September however have since taken a break due to not being ready for going to uni. I am feeling a lot better about going back into education this September however have been having some doubts as to where to study. I still have my place at soas however one of my biggest concerns is the cost of living. When I was at soas last year I was constantly worrying about money and how I would be able to afford 2nd year or the year abroad. I've heard that the Japanese department at Sheffield is good and that the cost of living is a lot better. Is there anyone doing BA Japanese at Sheffield that can let me know how it is?

SOAS accommodation choice is terrible and expensive; it was that reason I never considered the place. Sheffield is cheaper and their Asian studies department is very good.

Yeah, the accommodation I've booked is £260 a week and the only reason I'm able to afford it is because I've spent the whole year working so I feel like I'd just worry too much about the cost which would effect my studies and overall experience :/

You had a difficult time.

SOAS is very strong in Asian and African studies. But you are right, the super high living costs is lethal. Could you talk to them yo skip the year abroad? Or are there job opportunities, e.g. part time teaching English during the year abroad?

Have you compare the course structures between Sheffield and SOAS? Purely academically would you be equally happy in Sheffield?

Does Sheffield allow direct entry into 2nd year? If not then maybe you have you compare the outstanding financial burdens, 3 years in Sheffield vs 2 years in SOAS, before deciding. Good luck.

Hi, 👋

It's great to hear you are feeling ready to get back into education. The School for East Asian Studies at Sheffield is amazing, I know someone currently doing their PhD in this school and they love the amount of support and the resources! We have leading research in East Asian Studies! 😀

Our Japanese Studies BA is ranked 1st in National Student Survey (NSS) results 2023 across Asian studies in the UK; our staff are UK leaders in supporting your studies and career goals. 😯

You can also choose to have a year abroad as part of your studies. ✈️

I have studied in Sheffield for my BA, MA and now PhD and I have found it to be very affordable and just a great place to live with so much to do and get involved with. 😀

Please let me know if you have anymore questions about the School for East Asian Studies, or just living/studying in Sheffield in general. Also you can get in touch with one of our student ambassadors from this school. I don't think there is an ambassador currently on the Japanese studies course but we have a student ambassador on Korean studies. If you want to chat to them about their experiences as part of the school of East Asian studies, you can do so here.

But let me know if I can help with anything further. 😄

All best wishes,
Phoebe
