Psychology work experience gap year

If I decide to take a gap year after year 13 ie. when im over 18, to focus more on application stuff,(and cuz my current Y12 predicted grades are definitly not enough for any uni offers) , will I find more work experience to strenthen my personal statement? As currently all the work experiences I'm finding is either online and limited amount or litterally impossible to find and unavaliable cuz of confidentiality issues, and I was hoping that when I'll be an adult they'll lessen some of the requirements
Please give me advice,
Thank you!
Hello,

This sounds like a good idea if you want to strengthen your personal statement. Psychology is all about the study of people, hence any work experience in which you are going to get a greater understanding of this would fit nicely. During my gap year I worked as a retail assistant, which isn't necessarily psychology specific but still allowed me to discuss skills such as professionalism and communication in my personal statement. You could also consider volunteering in an area you are interested in e.g. if you are interested in developmental psychology you could find a local children's scouts/sports group to help out with!

Hope that helps and gives you some more ideas!

Most work experience for psychology requires you to be a graduate, so I'm not surprised that you are finding this so difficult.

Why don't you keep going with your current courses and look at the possibility of BSc Psychology with foundation | University of Buckingham. This is just a 3-year course including the Foundation year. If your grades aren't sufficient for direct entry to BSc, this could be a better route to your chosen subject. Typical offers
Applicants must have a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades 4-9, including English and Maths, or their international equivalents. In addition, applicants must have one of the following qualifications or their international equivalents:

A Levels with minimum grades of DD

BTEC National Diploma with minimum grades of MPP

Other Level 3 qualifications equivalent to at least 48 UCAS points

If you want to see for yourself, come to our Open Day on 28th June Open Day June 2025 | The University of Buckingham and join the Psychology subject session.

Once you hold BSc Psychology degree, work experience or PG study can follow.
Hope this helps
Annie
