University Help

Hi, I am currently studying my A levels and am interested in going to university to explore further in my main interests of fine art or photography. I was just wondering if anyone can speak from experience maybe having done these courses before and potentially give me some advice on where they went or how they found this course to be overall. Also, I wanted to ask if at university it is possible to take both of these subjects, would I need to choose the one to do or could I incorporate both in one course.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Good evening,

It's great to hear you are thinking of studying at university.

There are lots of undergraduate courses in art, so it can be tricky to choose. At the University of Reading, there are lots of options to mix your course up! There are options such as BA Art and Philosophy, BA Art and Creative Writing and BA Art and Psychology. However, I do not believe there is an Art and photography course at the University of Reading, but there may be a joint course elsewhere.

There may be the opportunity to use your photography skills within a fine art course, this might be something to look into. I recommend you contact our unibuddy ambassador who can advise you on this. You can contact Abigail, the art ambassador, here. She can also give you more advice on the ins and outs of the course.

When I was applying to the university, I found it very helpful to attend an Open Day; however, for students who live far away or do not have access to an Open Day, there is a Virtual Tour, which prospective students can look at from their homes. I highly recommend you have a look at the Virtual Tour; it provides an insight to the campus.

The University of Reading makes contextual offers for all its courses, ensuring every applicant has a chance at gaining entry; more details can be found in the highlighted link. Student blogs highlight their opinions on the university facilities, such as UoR Secret Garden, Making the Most of the Library, and Making the Most out of the Careers Service.

Similarly, you can find blogs about the local town, exploring the Reading town centre, five best day trips, and Natural spots in Reading.

I hope this information helps, and if you have any questions please let us know.

All the best,
Ella

Hey @Molm_!

I currently study BA (Hons) Fine Art & Art History at Kingston University London, which offers undergraduate courses in both Photography and Fine Art:

As a Fine Art & Art History student, my course has a high degree of overlap with the Fine Art BA. I absolutely love the Fine Art element of my degree; unlike other undergraduate art courses, Fine Art allows you to explore nearly any type of medium and theme without being restricted to one form of production.

Some universities might offer a combined course: for example, University of Arts London (UAL) offers a BA (Hons) Fine Art: Photography degree. However, I think it's important to note that you can explore photography within a standard Fine Art degree as well; lots of the students on my course are primarily photographers who only occasionally draw/paint when they feel like it.

Hope this was helpful, and if you have any other questions about studying Fine Art, let me know! 🙂
Eve (Kingston Rep).
