OCR English lit coursework

I need help! I need help deciding which novel to compare to a streetcar named desire. I’m doing OCR a level English lit & will need at least a B possibly an A for uni. I don’t particularly enjoy the play so I would like to enjoy the book. I already know the colour purple is suitable but I would also like some more examples that I can read over the next few months in preparation as I don’t want to fall behind. Thank you!

Hi! Year 13 OCR student here! My school chose the texts for us but I still did Streetcar Named Desire, they chose to compare it to Carol Ann Duffy’s Feminine Gospels. That isn’t a novel but a collection of poetry, which may not be right for you but there was a lot to talk about comparison wise (presuming this is for your comparison question). I’m not sure what text you are doing for your close reading coursework but my school did The Color Purple so I can’t really compare how that would work for the comparison question. All I can say though is that the fact we had a selection of poems helped with the amount of different things we could say, as the poems all talked about different things.

I think it also depends what kind of title you were thinking about - there is a lot about gender and expression in the poetry, and obviously other things. Many people I know find it easier to talk about gender so if you wanted to do that too I would recommend the poetry.
Even if you hadn’t thought about this aspect, I would 100% recommend checking it out, just in case. Specifically I would recommend that you read: Beautiful, The Map Woman, Sub, The Cord and The Diet. There are others within the collection but they are the main ones we used at my school.

I hope this helps a little! Also don’t worry about the coursework, it’s not as difficult as you think when you get into writing it. I need an A for uni as well and I believe my coursework will help towards that, it helps a lot with the fact you can keep editing it until it sounds how you want it to. I would, however, recommend that you write it/start writing it before or at the start of year 13. I wrote half of mine in September of year 13 and then finished it in October, it was so useful getting it out of the way and knowing that it’ll help with my grades going into exams.

Good luck with your A-Levels!!
