Biochemistry at Edinburgh

Does anyone know the balance of biology and chemistry in biochemistry, as i find organic chemistry and molecular biology really interesting but i have heard organic/biological chemistry is not covered much?

Hi @finlay12453

I'm not at Edinburgh, but I'm a biochemist at Lancaster. Biochemistry is predominantly a biology degree, and will massively vary in chemistry content between universities. Some will have no chemistry, some will have a single "chemistry for biochemists" modules, and some will have a decent amount. In my first year I took 7 chemistry modules - all of which were shared with students on the chemistry degree scheme, while I do less chemistry now I really enjoyed that first year and it's part of the reason I chose Lancaster.

I'd recommend looking over the modules/course structure that the university has on their webpage. You could also email the department directly to ask about the split?

Good luck with your applications!

biochemistry at Edinburgh is straight biology for the first two years, and then you can specialise in biochemistry in year 3
