Btec Applied Science

@DataVenia

I’m in my first year doing btec applied science. I need help on knowing overall grade for my first year and what’s most likely to be my predicted grades in my second year if I managed to achieve. I’m hoping to get DDM or DDD.

Unit 1 - Pass
Unit 2 -Distinction
Unit 3 - (just did the exam) most likely to be a pass or merit
Unit 4 - Distinction
Unit 8 - Distinction
Unit 12 - Pass

The first year of a Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Applied Science is a Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Foundation Diploma in Applied Science, so we can use the official BTEC calculator for that qualification to get you a first-year grade. For the external (exam-based) units - i.e. Unit 1 and Unit 3 - your grade only tells us the range of BTEC points which you'll earn. For the actual number of BTEC points your mark is required (along with the grade boundaries for that set of exams).

Anyway, here goes:
Unit 1 is a 90 GLH external unit; a Pass earns you between 9 and 14 points.
Unit 2 is a 90 GLH internal unit; a Distinction earns you 24 points.
Unit 3 is a 120 GLH external unit; a Pass earns you between 12 and 19 points, whilst a Merit earns you between 20 and 31 points.
Unit 4 is a 90 GLH internal unit; a Distinction earns you 24 points.
Unit 8 is a 60 GLH internal unit; a Distinction earns you 16 points.
Unit 12 is a 60 GLH internal unit; a Pass earns you 6 points.

So you have anywhere between 91 and 115 BTEC points, which you can see depicted using the official calculator below, which show that you have either an M or a D. We can't tell what grade you'll actually get without more information, but numerically an M is more likely (as M needs 73 points but D needs 104 points).

Scaling-up the 510 GLH of the first year to the 1080 GLH of both years gives a likely overall points range of between 193 and 244, or DMM to D*DD, with DDD being numerically most likely.

That's exactly the same result I came up with when you asked this question last month, here, with slightly different grades (as you were predicting an M or a D for Unit 3 at the time).

You should ask your tutor if they have the BTEC grade calculator, or try https://qualifications.pearson.com/en/support/support-topics/results-certification/understanding-marks-and-grades/using-the-next-generation-btec-nqf-grade-calculator.html
