Not sure if I should take a gap year or not?

So I applied for Mech Eng. I received offers from Kings, Baths and Bristol, and was rejected by Imperial and UCL. I'm most likely going to firm Bath, due to the year in industry course, but I really wanted to get into UCL, due to the campus, location (25-30 min commute from where I live) and the prestige in terms of being a target uni. I applied with 9999988886 and 3A* (maths chem physics) and if I achieve the 3A* I'm thinking of doing a gap year and reapplying. Especially cos UCL will require the ESAT next year, so I think I can make up for not doing FM and my GCSEs (Got a 5.1 avg in it this year but I back myself to do better if do it again next year). Any advice would be appreciated 🙏

I would recommend reaching out to UCL admissions. Ask for informal feedback, and clarify if 3A*s + a strong ESAT might change their decision next year. This gives you a clearer picture before committing to a gap year.

The obvious con to reapplying is that there's no guarantee UCL will accept you on a second try. Reapplicants often face higher scrutiny, and UCL can be opaque with decisions. But, if you show significant progress within that gap year, e.g you smash the ESAT and potentially do relevant work experience or short courses/projects, this will greatly enhance your chances, especially if you achieve triple A star.

Another option to consider is firming bath, and if you feel unsatisfied, ask for a first-year transfer or reapplication for entry in the following year at UCL. This is uncommon but possible.

So at the end of the day, focus on getting those 3 A-stars. If you manage this, you'll be in a fantastic posistion when it comes time to make a choice.🙂🤞

Make your Firm and Insurance choices from the offers you have. Work your socks off to get the best grades you can and then wait for Results Day. If you get A* grades then think about a gap year and reapplying. Or you dont, then you would still have excellent Unis to go to. Remember that just being at either Imperial or UCL does not guarantee you an instantly 'better' career or a happier life.
