Advanced higher for fashion marketing or fashion pr and communication

For anyone planning on studying fashion marketing or fashion pr and com, what advanced highers would you recommend I should pick next year. I’m planning on taking AH Art, French and Higher English and philosophy but I have plenty of time to change my subjects.

My friends who are doing the same course did AH art and also higher photography so definitely keep AH Art. I did AH french and it was really good but it’s quite the big step up from higher i say keep it cause it’ll be useful in any degree!

I think your subject choices sound great, so unless you're unhappy with them, I'd keep them as is.

I think AdvH Art and Higher English seem like really strong, necessary choices. Higher Philosophy is a great subject, and I feel like it's really transferable over lots of areas and issues. AdvH French sounds great as a language at that level could only open doors for you.

Hi @1choou

These options sound great!

I study fashion promotion and communication here at Kingston and I studied textiles, English and politics at a-level. I also did a art and design foundation year after a-levels at my local college, which is always a great option for building a portfolio and having more time to consider your university choices.

If you have any questions, maybe about what the course is like here that might help you choosing your advanced highers, then I would be happy to answer

Thanks for the response! Would you say an art and design foundation year is really important because I’d rather go straight to uni after completing my Adv Highers/Highers. Also Kingston is one of my choices, how is the fashion promotion and communication course there? How is the course format, what kind of testing do you go throughout the course? How affordable is accommodation there?

Hello,
It's great that you are interested in studying these courses as we offer them at UAL London College of Fashion (LCF). I have just finished a fashion communication course at LCF so I can help out with your question.

In order to make an informed decision, make sure to look at your course specification so you have a real understanding on the content you will be doing. For example, I did fashion journalism and it was a very writing heavy course - so for my A Levels I picked essay based subjects as it allowed me to practice my writing. I did English lit, history and French, even though they aren't directly linked in fashion, it was still helpful as I could transfer the skills I learnt into a fashion context. That being said, the courses you are currently doing also have transferrable skills which can help you in marketing and PR. If you would still like to change courses, perhaps consider media if your college offers it.

At UAL, all the courses have an online page with details including suggested courses to do beforehand. If you are considering UAL, I would advise checking out the pages I have linked below:

fashion marketing and content creation
fashion pr and comms

Hiya, thanks for the response. I’ve looked at the course specification but it didn’t say anything about preferred subjects + any info on Scottish Qualifications requirements. Also does UAL offer placement years as part of their courses?

Hi @1choou

Lovely to hear that Kingston is one of your choices!

You could definitely go straight to university without a foundation degree. It can be useful to have but not necessary.

I really enjoy the fashion promotion course here at Kingston. You study a range of modules and work on different projects throughout the year. In my first year I studied the following modules:
Fashion Context: This was all about PR and marketing, analysing brands and using marketing and business strategies, creating brand reports and new communication plans.
Professional Practice: A really creative module where we would have workshops in styling, photography, graphic design, image making etc. The project we worked on was creating a zine, so you could really focus on a medium that interests you or try a few.
CHS (Critical historical studies): In this module we learnt about the different histories and concepts in the fashion industry. Analysing images and text. The assignments for this are essays.
Fashion Promotion and Communication: This was really a mix of everything, putting all we had learnt into practice to work on projects that we could really be asked to do in industry. Such as proposing collaborations and creating campaigns, making sure we could back up our proposals with strong research.

There is a good balanced between independent study and timetabled lectures and workshops etc. The way you are assed is through course work assignments/projects. So at the beginning of each term you are usually briefed on the projects for that term. And then throughout the term there will be lectures to help you with that assignment along with workshops and 1 to 1 tutorial time with the teachers to show them what you have been working on. We also often get guest lectures in to do talks and there will be a few trips throughout the year to galleries and events.

I have a few previous posts I have done about my experience on the course that I will link:
A day in the Life as a Fashion Comms Student at Kingston uni - The Student Room
A Week in the Life as a Fashion Comms Student (Kingston University) - The Student Room
Why I Chose Fashion Communication at Kingston - The Student Room

In terms of accommodation I would say it is more affordable than central London which I think is good considering I still get the London maintenance loan.
I would have a look at the halls prices on the website Halls of residence | Kingston University London
You can usually get 2nd and 3rd year accommodation for similar weekly prices, sometimes cheaper, but you have to consider that the contract will be usually a year with a private landlord rather than usually 40 weeks with halls.
I also have a post with my monthly spends that you may find useful I will link it here Monthly Spending Expenses as a Kingston Student - The Student Room

I hope this helps and feel free to ask any more questions

Hello,
On each page I linked in my previous comment, you can scroll down to the section where it says entry requirements and it has a list of all the type of qualification levels they accept as well as preferred subjects. Also, there are many courses on UAL they allow for a placement year (if not all). Some of the courses have a placement year embedded into the course, while others may offer it as an optional DIPS year (Diploma in Professional Studies). Make sure to check each course curriculum beforehand to be sure if this is a deal breaker for you. UAL also offers similar courses across the different campuses so a course in one campus may offer placement while another does not. For example with my course, fashion journalism at the LCF campus has an optional placement year while at CSM it is embedded into the course.

I hope this has helped with making your decision and I wish you the best with your application.
