Student Ambassadors, do you need another job to cover your general cost of living.

I'm currently a Year 12 student starting my research on potential universities to apply for. Lanaster is currently my top pick, however I can imagine it being difficult to find work in cities / towns with a smaller size. My estimate maintenance plus a scholarship would be just under typical accomodation contracts, without even considering cost of living. Will an on-campus / student ambassador job provide a steady stream of hours working? Or will I have to factor in the possibility of finding work in the city itself?

There are other opportunities on campus in the cafes and bars, sports facilities, etc. Also, keep an eye on the following page:

Hi @yeletez

Our student ambassador roles at Lancaster are zero-hour contracts, so we don't necessarily have guaranteed hours unless we are a Student Ambassador Leader. There's training you can do to become qualified for lots of different roles, we work Open/Offer Holder Days, we have campus tours every week, school visits, HE fairs, set up shifts, virtual tours, city tours, TSR reps, Unibuddy etc. However, at some times it's not as easy to get a shift - especially the popular ones! I would absolutely recommend becoming a student ambassador to anyone, as the people I've met and the skills I've gained have been so important to my university experience, and there's definitely the opportunity to earn a decent amount, however, because of the zero-hour contract I don't know if I'd rely on it as my only income source if I knew I needed that money to live at university.

However, there are lots of other on-campus/university jobs that probably have more consistent hours. There are lots of opportunities to work as part of the bar staff across the colleges, we have other cafes/restaurants on campus that are often looking for staff as well. Our Student Union nightclub, Sugarhouse, is also great at providing student jobs if you don't mind the late nights! I've also known people who work at supermarkets, e.g. Sainsbury's, at home over the holidays transfer to the Lancaster store during term time, and there's so many bars and restaurants in the city that I'm sure they're looking for staff as well!

The link that @normaw has posted is the place to look! I've found all of my part-time jobs on that site and there's some really cool opportunities that come up if you keep an eye out!

I hope I could help!

Thanks! Even though the role isnt directly consistent in terms of wage, I will still 100% consider it if I end up coming to Lancaster, as the work seems engaging and beneficial towards improving my skills!

Hi Yeletez,

I have been working as a LJMU Student Ambassador since my first year of uni. I love the job as it’s super flexible, some weeks I chose to work 5 hours and others I can work 40. This fits nicely around my studies and means that I’m not overwhelmed with shifts during deadline season. LJMU also pay all their ambassadors a living wage, which is above national minimum wage regardless of age.

Personally I get minimum student loan and have been able to financially support myself through university completely from working as an LJMU ambassador. LJMU also have a UNITEMPS department which help give students jobs in and around the university. For example you could be working in the university cafe or helping act as a patient model for the nursing students exams! The UNITEMPS jobs are usually really well paid and the team are so friendly.

I would definitely recommend working as an LJMU Student Ambassador over getting a job in a bar or restaurant. You have more flexibility with your shifts, you get holiday pay and you don’t work late nights so it’s easier to keep up with uni work.

Hope this helps!

Tilly.
