Can I talk about my EPQ on my ucas personal statement?

Hi! I'm in year 12 and looking to study psychology/ educational psych at uni (not sure which one). However I have heard that in your personal statement, you need to put skills and qualifications related to your chosen subject at uni. I dont have much skills with psych other than studying it in A level and doing a small psychology online work experience on springpod. My EPQ is about agression in children and I was hoping that could show the unis that I;m interested in psych, but I dont know if unis would look at my EPQ or just look at the grade I got from it. I could mention my EPQ in my personal statement as well but idkkk
please give advice thankss

From personal experience, I spoke about my epq on physics in my personal statement and got an offer from every uni I applied for, some giving me a lower conditional offer based on my epq grade. I think you should definitely mention it as it proves your enthusiasm for the subject and your willingness to go beyond A level spec to improve your understanding.

Hi Jollybeansss!

It’s great to hear you are already thinking about your university application! In your personal statement it’s important to talk about your passion for the subject, your relevant knowledge/experience and transferable skills which would make you an outstanding candidate. I would say it is a great idea to mention your EPQ, especially if it’s something you are passionate about and related to your degree subject area.

You said you don’t have much experience related to psychology but it’s important to remember that universities don’t expect you to have years of experience in psychology at 18/19 years old! The fact you have done work experience is brilliant and definitely worth mentioning. Also think of any transferable skills you have developed from part time work or volunteering alongside your A-level studies. In my personal statement I mentioned my part time job as it taught me many skills such as time management, organisation and communication.

Best of luck with your application!

Tilly.

Yes!!! It shows your interest in the subject, and shows your ability to do university-style independent research!
Also, if you have not yet completed the EPQ/ end up not submitting it for any reason, you can still talk about it
