Should child maintenance stop after A levels or continue through university?

Hi everyone,

I’m interested in hearing your thoughts on whether child maintenance payments should continue while a child is at university. At the moment, payments usually stop at the end of A-levels (or equivalent), but many young adults still rely on financial support from their parents while studying at university especially with rising living costs.

Do you think it's fair for child maintenance to end once someone turns 18 or finishes school? Or should there be an option to extend support while they’re in higher education?

I’d love to hear different views whether you’re a student, parent or just have an opinion on this topic. It's something that came up in our family mediation sessions and we have differing opinions on it  Thank you in advance

You should definitely try to reach an agreement between you, as you don;t want this to negatively impact on your child. Child maintenance is only paid until A levels, or before if they get a full time apprenticeship. My ex and I worked out a plan for our children if they went to university, where we both put money aside for them. In the end only one of them went to uni, so the other got a bit of lump sum bonus on their 18th birthday. I'd avoid costly solicitors and if you are really struggling to reach an agreement, try using family mediation - but stay away from courts as costs get silly!
