Medicine - Brunel or Edge Hill

Hi, I’m currently deciding which university to choose as my firm and insurance option for studying medicine and the deadline is pretty close, I would really appreciate some advice. I’ve received offers from Brunel and Edge Hill, and both have the same grade requirements, so my decision comes down to my firm choice.

Brunel uses a Team-Based Learning (TBL) approach with no in-person lectures—instead, they provide online lecture videos that students are expected to review independently. Edge Hill, on the other hand, follows a more traditional structure with in-person lectures and CBL/PBL (Case-Based and Problem-Based Learning). Both universities offer clinical placements starting from Year 1.

My main concerns are:
1. Distance from home I tend to get homesick easily. Brunel is around 1.5 hours away, while Edge Hill is 4–5 hours away.
2. Course structure I’m worried that Brunel’s TBL model might be too independent for me, and I might struggle without structured lectures.

Given these factors, I’m trying to decide which university would be the better choice for me personally. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Hi! What I'd like to advice you is that you'll be studying at the University for 5 years, which is a long time. If you aren't comfortable with the teaching techniques, you might end up struggling a lot more than you would otherwise, especially since Medicine is such a tough course already!

Also, for your home distance, if it is possible for you to live at the university, you can work around going home pretty often. That would be weekends and the long holidays that you'll get, since the distance isn't so far that it's possible to go back home over the weekend.

Obviously, the most important thing is that you won't regret your choice, I'm sure you won't regardless of what you choose! Either choice is amazing, and either of them you'll come to love once you start. Good luck, on congratulations on the places!

I personally feel like TBL is great for actually transitioning into the medical field because you will have had lots of practice of what you will be doing on a daily basis. Medicine in practice isn’t just remembering content taught in lectures, it’s being able to apply knowledge to problem solve and i feel like TBL would help you to remember that content because you’re being taught the content in context of a situation. quite a few of medical schools have to either integrated or TBL style learning recently so it is clearly effective. I also think that the convenience of brunel being 1.5 hours away compared to 4.5 hours is definitely a big factor, it would be much easier to go back home to see your family or friends, even in the case that say 1 month in you realise you need something from home, it would be easier to plan a visit to retrieve said thing if you were at brunel rather than edge hill. ultimately it’s where you would feel most comfortable, you’ll still have the same qualifications as every other doctor in 5 years wherever you go, you just need to make sure you’ll get the most out of it
