Question about student life and student accommodation

Hi . I am thinking of going to your institution next year. From your experience, what are the good things about it? What about any negatives? Is it welcoming for Muslim students?

Also, can you let me know some tips on the best place to live? Do most people live at the campus or do we need to find some place for ourselves?

Looking forward to your response!

Thanks,

You refer to "your institution", but have posted this in the general "student life" forum rather than one of the institution-specific forums.

Which university will you be attending?
I wonder if it’s Coventry…

Hi Omar 🙂

If you could let me know which universities your interested i could give you a bit more info!

However, speaking generally some good things about uni are:

amazing social life

Diverse communities

Great support and overall effective teaching as well as personal growth

Independence, freedom and good life experiences

lots of opportunities to go study abroad, internships and work placements as well as lots of career opportunities

And here are some possible negatives:

the cost of university

Job market after uni can be difficult

Sometimes the academic pressure can build up and can be stressful

some people tend to get homesick or struggle to make friends, however, There is always people out there who are willing to meet more people so get yourself out there!

Uni isn't for everyone and that's okay! Just give it a go and if it's not for you that's fine!

Hope this helps!

Hi there,

This can obviously vary depending on the university and i can only share my view of Coventry University. I am going into my 5th year of study there so i have been around on campus for quite a while!

As a student ambassador i give school tours and know a lot about the demographic of the uni, we are very diverse population of students including many different faiths and religions. There are lots of student led societies, including many faith groups.

Our Spirituality and Faith Centre in the HUB is open to all and has Muslim prayer rooms (with ablution facilities), a spacious lounge and a multi-faith library.

As for accomodation, most first years choose university owned halls chosen through the website but other private owned ones are also available. All the uni owned ones ae very close to the centre of campus, and here is another link giving you more information:

Hope this helps

Hi Omar,

Like others have said, I am not sure what University you are hoping to attend next year, so I can only talk from my experience at Hallam. I thought I could answer this anyway as it if often helps to have a range of opinions.

General positives about Uni:

It's fun getting to meet lots of new people! You end up meeting so many people at uni which is really fun and you will make lots of friends

You get to study something you are interested in which makes studying a lot more fun than at A level or GCSE level!

You get to live independently which is a good experience and likely something you may not have done before.

There will be chances to join lots of new things such as societies and other groups

You will have lots of freedom and independence

Some negatives or potential negatives

It can be hard living away from home for some people.

It can be stressful when you have lots of deadlines approaching

It is expensive

There is no guarantee of a job after Uni, although it does help.

In terms of where you live, again it depends on where you want to go but most universities will have accommodation that their students usually live in. There should be an accommodation page on the uni website which will tell you more about this. It is fun living with other students so if you can, I would recommend this.

I hope some of this helps,

Lucy -SHU student ambassador 🙂
