The Hidden Price Tag of Fast Fashion!
By Laiba

Nowadays those deals are practically unescapable! hoodie on Shein? Immediately added to our carts. trousers at Primark; what a steal! In all honesty, who can truly resist fast fashion? It's trendy, easily available but most of all cheap. Whilst these affordable prices can help out those on minimum wage, what about those behind the price tag? My opinion is that fast fashion needs to stop now. Why? They are unethically produced and environmentally unfriendly. We must be more aware of where our clothes come from and how they are made.

Did you know a child is paid 5 pence for that shirt you're wearing? Yes, you read that right, a child. Children as young as the age of 5 are forced to work in a sweatshop in appalling and absolutely horrendous conditions. Charities such as UNICEF have revealed that many people work up to 18 hours with no break, no sick pay, in buildings that can collapse any second. It was even revealed in a news report that 20% of child labourers in China worked for free! Imagine your child slaving away in a factory. Does that Shein hoodie still sound appealing? If child labour occured in the UK, this would be scandalous so why is it okay when it happens a thousand miles away? It's time to wake up to reality!

The unfriendly environmental impacts are another reason we must ditch fast fashion. Prices are essentially so cheap that clothing is practically disposable. How many times have you seen your favourite social media star wear the same outfit twice? This normalisation of over-consumption and disposing those great pair of jeans results in 100 tonnes of clothes ending up in the landfills in just one year in the UK alone. Imagine how much clothes we dispose globally! According to the United Nations report on the crisis of climate change, 20% of global carbon emissions is from fast fashion. Would you rather choose our planet or those dresses?

Now, I know what you're thinking, 'I just can't afford it!' I understand the struggle I swear! However, did you know that buying that expensive shirt is somewhat cheaper? How does that even make sense? Well, according to Vogue, buying a T-shirt from Next in comparison to Primark is more sustainable as it is a higher quality. Vogue also conducted a study that buying more expensive clothing can save you up to £50 a year. I know that doesn't sound a lot but I'm sure you would fancy £50 saved than spent. No one is asking you to shop at Gucci but spending a little is more sustainable in the long for you, those poor labourers and the environment!

If we band together to slow down 'fast fashion', the world will improve drastically, socially, economically and Next time you find yourself at Primark, ask yourself, is it truly worth it for that child and the environment? It's time to slow down 'fast fashion'!

Hi Laiba 😊,
I am a yr 11 student taking exams this year aswell so I am going through same troubles.
let us start off with strengths:

Engaging and persuasive tone

Clear structure counter arguments.

Facts and evidence

Strong viewpoint

Variety of language techniques

onto the improvements need to be made (why do I sound like a boring teacher?)

Grammar/Spelling
"unescapable" --> "inescapable""occured" --> "occurred"

Conclusion Could be more impactful. End with a strong call to action or a memorable phrase (e.g., "Be the change—your wardrobe shouldn’t cost the Earth!")

Overall, I think it is quite good. Inshallah we both get grade 9s in our exams this year and meet again.
