ask me about revision/advice for sqa exams

hey! ive seen sqa exams have started for this year and wanted to wish everyone luck, also to give any advice if needed from someone who has the completed set! I sat 8 Nat5s in S4 (English, maths, art, economics, physics, engineering, german, history), 5 Highers in S5 (classics, english, maths, engineering, history) and the in S6, 3adv highers (classics, history, english) and also 1 higher (latin). I achieved all A's in my exams and was particularly strong in humanities which I know is a difficult time when revising so please ask away

Hi,
I am kinda nervous about higher English as I don't feel prepared. I am ok with the RUAE paper, but the critical reading paper is a big deal for me.

For Scottish Set Text, I am doing poetry by Liz Lochhead. Any advice on this would be helpful.

For the Critical Essay, I am doing The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. My plan for this would be to memorise an introduction and a conclusion structure, then memorise 2 pre-prepared essays, one would be about a character whom I feel sympathy for/isolated, the other would a character who is flawed/vulnerable - basically how his arrogance and pride result in bad stuff. If there is time left, then memorise a key scene essay too, which would kind of be based on the flawed/vulnerable essay. Any advice for critical essay?

Do you think this approach is good to secure an A in Higher English?

Sounds like you're doing a good job! Scottish text my advice would be to keep it simple. The questions could be done without having already seen the poem so trust that you've learnt them well throughout the year so take your time to write clear answers. Higher English essays are really easy to nail down in the exam with the correct approach which id say you've got a good grasp on. There will always be a question on character so its a good idea to come prepared there- even if attempting a key scene or theme you will be writing pretty similar stuff but just tweaking your analysis of it. This is easiest to do by having key quotes (these should be used in any form of essay) and the same for key scene/turning point - which should also be mentioned in a character essay. When I did it, I pretty much wrote the same essay throughout the whole course and tweaked it to answer the question. Do this by constantly linking back to the question - particularly at in your topic sentences and at the end of paragraphs evaluating. reinforce this then in your conclusion. It really does sound like you have nothing to worry about. don't stress so much about memorising whole essays and instead focus on individual key points and quotes and the essay pretty much writes itself. good luck!

I"m doing a play for Scottish Text and "Still I Rise" by Maya Angelou for the critical essay. Do you have any tips on writing a good essay? I feel like I'm just regurgitating information on not really liking to the question. Also, congratulations on such amazing results!

sounds like you know what you need to work on- always a good start! as you mentioned, the quotes you use and points you make can be used in essay question your answering. they key is then linking this to the question- do the with clear topic sentence and clear evaluation at the end of the paragraph. it should also be done in each analysis. use the wording of the question in you answer. you will feel like your repeating yourself but its what gets you the marks! in terms of just regurgitation information- you should find yourself making points and moving on with a clear pace and structure. if you feel your overexplaining/writing for a specific point then its probably not worth making. Good luck!

for my revision, I the whiteboard blurting method worked best. I had created mind maps through the year of clear facts I wanted to use and just committed these to memory. grilling process but not many other ways to be done. also bare in mind things will come back to you in the exam so you probably know more than you think! I think its the 'explain' question that's always going to be in the paper- write out answer for each topic on this and get them marked by your teacher. commit these to memory and easy 8/8 marks (and then you can use the rest that you memorised that wasn't asked of it in other questions). Good luck!!

I'll be completely honest - I don't think I revised for German. from what I remember for the writing I had just written one and got it marked by a teacher. once it was full marks I just committed it to memory and got an easy 20 marks that way. other than that im afraid I have no advice, sorry!!
