Can anyone let me know if mechanical engineering at Cardiff uni is good and whether the future of the course is certain? What are the labs like? And the building and libraries as I haven’t been to an open day and I can’t now that I am in exams.

Hi there!

Generally, I have heard good things about the course! It's based in Queens Building, which is pretty much right in city center. You get lots of interesting opportunities, like getting involved in the designing the university's racing cars.

In terms of your future prospects, a resource I recommend a lot is Discover Uni. Its a website that compares student satisfaction and employability stats between courses and universities. For Mechanical Engineering at Cardiff for example, the course has a high percentage of students that go onto work or further study after their degree. The website also tells you things about earnings and what kind of jobs people find themselves in, but bear in mind, results depend on how many people do answer, so its worth keeping that in mind

In terms of things about the course experience like labs, I recommend reaching out to anyone in the Engineering Society, as I'm sure they'd be happy to help. Otherwise, you're more than welcome to ask university staff

I hope that helped provide a little bit of insight!

Thanks a lot of replying! I am just so worried about if the debt will impact the engineering department. I have an offer for Exeter and I am trying to decide between Cardiff or Exter right now.

Totally get the worry, it can be a nerve-wracking time, especially as an applicant! However, you might be reassured to know that students currently at the university will still be able to graduate from their programmes - nothing is going be changing quickly. Anyone with an offer to start their course in 2025 will still be able to do so.

In general, the way debt or cuts could affect a university can be totally different depending on the department - some schools might be affected less than others! If it helps, the university published a statement on their websites about the initial proposed changes at the start of the year, which details that there are currently no proposed changes regarding the School of Engineering.

If you're still worried, I recommend contacting university staff via the link in my previous message, they'd be more happy to help
