How long do most people stay ill for before they start worrying it’s cancer?

Wondering when I can go back to my doctor with another cancer scare without just immediately being dismissed as a crazy and not getting any tests done

The only time I genuinely thought I might have a tumour was when doctors brought it up because of dodgy blood tests, and only because I have a family history of tumours that could cause that, some abnormal tests I'd had in the past and because I'd had some vague symptoms for a couple of years that made me wonder if there might be something going on (but that wasn't why I had said blood tests and not something I even mentioned to the doctor).

Other than that, I frequently have random symptoms that probably could be due to cancer but I just ignore them. When I had a cough and couldn't breathe properly after having covid, I waited 4 months before seeing anyone. When I wondered about having an ovarian cyst, I waited for about a year. I don't particularly like seeing doctors and most things turn out to be nothing, so...

I have multiple panic attacks per day about it until the symptoms stop though or cancer is officially ruled out though lol

I totally understand how you feel! I've have anxiety/panic attacks and my health/fear of getting cancer was REALLY bad in the last few months. But, talking to a counsellor, blocking safari on my phone to prevent looking up symptoms and doing things I enjoy to distract myself has really help! I'd really recommend getting support for this, Its not an instant fix but overtime I promise it will help!

Also, I'd recommended gradually exposing yourself to cancer related content, not a lot, but just a little overtime. I found it all incredibly triggering at first, but the more I've been exposed the less the content triggers me. Yes, it is still scary, but we all have those fears! But, now I think about all the stories of people beating cancer and how survival rates are higher than ever!

I also find it helpful to think 'If there are two timelines, one were I get cancer and one where I won't, neither would want me to be worried about it' I know its hard, but live your life! Save the stress for if it does happen and live now! Don't waste your life away worrying because it may not even happen, and it would be a shame to lose out on life worrying about something that never even ended up happening.

I know its hard, I am still struggling with it too and I'm far from getting over my health anxiety! But, I promise with support it'll get easier!

This is not to say you should rule out all symptoms as anxiety. The key is to be in tune with your body. Don't dismiss sensations you feel, but also don't spiral over them. You won't always know what's causing a sensation, and that's ok! Just tell yourself it's just a sensation and that it is likely nothing. But, if it continues for a very long time and your concerned, get it checked for your peace of mind. It is most likely nothing, but don't stress about the possibility that it is something serious until you get to that point, its a waste of energy!

You asked how long people wait for and I answered for myself. I'm not saying you should do what I do - if you are having panic attacks and need reassurance, obviously go and see your GP.

I've mentioned cancer and tumours so many times to them that they just fob me off as some crazy person and won't do any tests so when I actually do have something serious they will just let me die most likely
