edinburgh accomodation

hi - im wondering if any former/current students had recommendations about where to apply for housing at Edinburgh uni. am trying to avoid pollock, and have my heart set on kincaids court because its very central and seems to be a good spot for a lot of parties and clubbing etc. i don't want an ensuite and would prefer a cheaper room. apart from kincaids, what accomodation is best for somebody looking for a cheap option, preferably with a central location (im doing english lit so would like to be near George Square as i understand that's where most of the humanities classes are) and good for clubbing/where a lot of the parties are - thanks!!

Hey! I'm living in Sciennes right now as a first year, and it is a pretty good accommodation in a great location since it's right next to the meadows (I literally roll out of bed in the morning and can run to lectures at george square in about ten minutes). The meadows are lovely to walk through especially in spring! However it is not the best for parties etc since it's in quite a quiet area and is out of the way a bit, although I appreciated the lack of noise around exam and midterm time. Robinson's close is also near the cowgate, I have a friend staying in there who says there's mainly international students so everyone is very friendly and there are a few parties held there (its also right next to nicholson street and the uni). I have heard pretty good things about kincaids court however a friend of mine says that there are often drunk people outside the entrance. All three are good options and are pretty cheap, good luck and if you have any more questions feel free to ask!

hi, i'd say college wynd is your next best accom choice. it's literally right next to kincaid's but with 4 person flats (instead of 10) and around 3 grand cheaper. it shares a common room with kincaid's also.

i was applying with roughly the same factors as you, my choices were (copy pasted from my emails)

- College Wynd , Standard Single, Shared, £5,686.90
- Nicolson South College Street , Standard Single, Shared, £5,686.90
- Mylnes Court , Standard Single, Shared, £6,561.40
- Blackwood Crescent/Causewayside , Single room in a 4 person flat, Shared, £5,686.90
- Holland Annexe , Standard Single, Shared, £5,708.36

luckily i got college wynd - i'm gap yearing rn so i don't have any experience of the accom yet

also apparently nicholson street is the least social from those?

no problem, i'm happy to help! I'll just write out some pros and cons for you:
Pros

Edinburgh is a great city to live in! relatively small and very walkable, public transport is also not too bad. I'd recomend getting a Young Scot Card (if you don't already have one) since it gives you free bus travel! There's also loads of cafes and tons of gigs and stuff (many have student discounts!) Also Edi has some nice pubs and the nightlife isn't too bad, although the karaoke places are better than the nightclubs in my opinion.

There are plenty of great study spaces around campus and the main library is very central and has loads of seats (although beware it gets really busy!)

I'm also studying English lit! I can tell you the course was fairly good this year, although you will have to study books you might not like too much. But the tutorials are very fun! Plus English lit doesn't have any exams at the end of the year, just a couple of essays as coursework

Edinburgh has loads of societies and clubs, plus most societies have really cheap memberships.

The campus. George square is gorgeous in early autumn and in spring, and the literature, languages and cultures building is right in the middle of george square and has loads of study spaces next to the windows.

Edinburgh is quite a prestigious university with a lot of ties and connections. MIght come in handy when you graduate!

cons

There are quite a lot of very wealthy students from private school that can be rude and snobby so just be wary (usually they're all in pollock or on courses like law or politics)

this con isn't necessarily about edinburgh in particular, just a tip for the future: make friends with your flatmates and people on your course! Uni can quickly make you feel lonely if you don't reach out to others!

Gym membership can be a bit expensive!

The weather; Edinburgh gets really dark and gloomy in the winter, and the wind becomes really cold so take a fluffy jacket!
All in all I think Edinburgh is a great city and university, and I hope you really enjoy it here! If you really don't vibe with edinburgh at all don't be afraid to start reconsidering your options - its your life, if you're not happy don't suffer in silence. If you have any more questions feel free to ask
Good luck, and enjoy your summer!
