do i choose KCl or Uni of Nottingham

So i recently received my offer for KCL electronic engineering (ABB), and i have an offer for UoN electrical and electronic engineering (BBC). So i live in london, so commuting to kcl would be alot cheaper than accom at notts, where my sfe would not cover all of my accom costs. however, the problem arises from the fact that kcl is an electronic course and notts is an EEE course, and i like the electrical side alot more than the electronic side. Also, kcls engineering department is not fairly new, so not as well established as notts and doesnt have any industry links as far as i am aware of, furthermore, nottingham has some of the best industry links and is a top engineering school. i am not really bothered about the uni life nottingham has to offer i am just interested in the academics and setting myself up for the future. i dont know what to choose, kcl is the more internationally well-regarded university and would have me in a much more comfortable financial position, while keeping me close to home and loved ones, whereas notts would probably be a better course and would give me an advantage in industry-links while being a better engineering school. help.

Personally, I would go for Nottingham.

I don't think it matters that much which of the 2 degrees you end up doing for employment purposes (get a second opinion from an electrical engineer) or academic purposes, but I think the fact you would be spending the next 3 years on a degree it should be one that you would love studying. Unless you intend on doing multiple undergraduate degrees, I think your first degree should be the one best suited to your interests, despite the costs (within reason).
You will always be able to see your friends during holidays, but you are attending university to study.

Hello @orgito!

Being at home is a major factor, which may make things much simpler at the start especially. I would argue that it could be a good idea to have a look at the different modules that you would be taking in both courses in order to identify which of the two programs is better suited to your interests. I am an engineering student at University of Nottingham and I have taken several EEE modules in the past, so feel free to ask more specific questions if you want 🙂.

Best of luck,
Abián.

Edurank reckon Nottingham is 8th in the UK for Electrical Engineering, KCL 25th.
They say that Nottingham is 10th best for Electronic Engineering, KCL 19th.
And overall as universities? They're closer than they are for the subject, KCL is 7th, Nottingham 12th.

okay, ive done more research on the actual modules of both. they look fairly similar, so i dont think that its a huge concern, the concern now is mainly the name, kcl is electronic not electrical. i assume employers would think electronic engineering is too specialised.

so knowing the context behind my situation, which would you go for ?

do you the fact that kcl offers electronic engineering would hinder me if i wanted to work in more of an electrical industry or another engineering industry like aero for example?

Hello @orgito!

Bear in mind this is obviously my personal opinion but Electronic Engineering in short is about using electricity to transmit information from point A to B. The trend in commercial aerospace platforms is moving towards implementing more electrical loads to substitute other energy sources (pneumatic, hydraulic, etc), which are likely to be controlled through power electronic converters. Hence, an Electronic Engineering degree could lead you to roles in the aerospace sector if that is a route you may be willing to pursue (you may look into More-Electric Aircraft, hybrid-electric platforms and so on if you are interested!).

I hope it helps,
Abián.
