Foundation year uni

For anyone doing a foundation year, what’s it like, class sizes? Is it mostly mature students? Is foundation year hard? Do you feel behind?

Because I’m thinking of doing law with criminology foundation degree.

Would appreciate some help, thanks!!

Class size etc will vary enormously between Unis and courses, but students will be mostly 18 year olds with low grades and not necessarily mature students.

It will be harder than A levels - because if it wasn't what would the point of taking it.

Its designed to bring you up to the standard of those starting the first year of the main degree with the required higher A level grades. Just bear in mind that if you want an easy life, and you just want the social life of 'being at Uni' with none of the academic work, Uni at any level is probably not the place for you.

Hey there 😃

Things like class sizes, student demographics, and teaching style can really vary depending on the university, so reaching out directly is the best way to get accurate info.

From my own experience doing a foundation year at De Montfort University, I was in a class of around 20 students. Most were younger, but there were also a few mature students, which added a nice mix of perspectives. Looking back, I’m really glad I did the foundation year. It made the transition into university-style learning so much smoother. Uni teaching tends to be a lot more independent than school, and having that extra year gave me the chance to slowly get used to it all. When I started the first year of my bachelor’s, it actually felt pretty easy and manageable because I was already familiar with the pace and expectations.

If you're unsure whether to go for a foundation year, I'd say it's definitely worth considering, especially if you want a bit more confidence and prep before diving into your degree!

I hope it will be helpful 💪 Feel free to reach out if you have any questions 😉 You can also chat with me or other students directly through The Ambassador Platform.

Take care,
