Hi @layla_ce11,

You might find it useful to chat to Leah, who is one of our current students on our BSc (Hons) Sports and Exercise Science degree, to learn more about the course and student experience. You can also find out more about our Department of Sport and Physical Activity here.

Our course enables students to develop a broad range of skills to enable them to go on to work in a wide range of roles, so don't worry about not having a set career path in mind yet. Examples of roles could include: physical activity and mental health promotion specialists, GP referral scheme co-ordinators and lifestyle managers. Our course currently offers students the opportunity to complete a work placement as part of the course, where students gain insight into career opportunities. Further information about work placement opportunities can be found here.

You might also find the Prospects website useful to search careers.

I hope this is helps, please do let me know if there is anything else I can assist you with 😊

Hey Layla!

I did my undergrad in Sport Science & Health and am now currently in the final stages of my Masters in Sport Nutrition

My undergrad degree was 4 years and I definitely didn't know where I wanted to go once I graduated

I had an idea in my second/third year that maybe I wanted to branch off into Biomechanics/Physiotherapy but came to find out that it wasn't really for me, so I switched to sport nutrition

The sport science degree is a challenging degree, but really worth doing in my opinion. As it is a general degree, you will have to specialise after you've graduated i.e., do a masters or become qualified in other areas like S&C for example. But from what I've seen, coming from the sport science background then specialising in a masters afterwards pays off more as you will have completed modules include nutrition, physiology, biomechanics, immunology, ergonomics etc where people who have completed an undergrad in lets say sport nutrition, may not have the same level of understanding as you do

I personally chose to work as a fitness instructor after graduation, taking a gap year to both save up money and to ensure sport nutrition was something I really wanted to pursue

Others from my cohort are working as S&C coaches, managers of gyms, football coaches, swimming coaches etc so there is a lot you can go into afterwards and I always recommend people to study sports science if its something they're interested in!

Just don't put pressure on yourself to have figured out exactly what you want to do with it after graduation, its a 3/4 year journey and you never know what area you might find the most interesting!

Best of luck

At LSBU, a lot of students on the Sports Science course feel the same way at first; it’s a subject people enjoy, but many aren’t sure what career path to choose straight away. Sports science can lead to careers in physiotherapy, personal training, sports coaching, rehabilitation, teaching, nutrition, health promotion, or even working with professional sports teams.

At LSBU, the course focuses on practical experience as well as theory. Many students get placements in gyms, schools, or sports clubs, which helps them figure out what career suits them best. You’ll study areas like exercise physiology, biomechanics, sports psychology, and injury rehabilitation, so you can explore different options.

If you’re unsure about your career plans now, that’s okay. A sports science degree keeps your options open while you explore what you enjoy most. You can always chat to LSBU’s Careers Hub or course tutors for guidance; they help students plan their next steps, whether that’s employment or further study, like a master’s or coaching qualifications.
Importantly, the Sports Science course is still open through Clearing, so you can apply now for a September start on the LSBU Clearing Page.

Hi layla,
It’s great to hear that you love Sports Science, that passion is the perfect starting point! At London South Bank University (LSBU), we offer several sport-related degrees, including BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science, Sport and Exercise Science with Foundation Year, and BSc (Hons) Sport Rehabilitation. Each of these courses gives you a mix of scientific knowledge, practical experience, and career-focused training to help you turn your love of sport into a rewarding profession.

If you study Sport and Exercise Science at LSBU, you’ll learn how the human body responds to exercise through modules in physiology, biomechanics, psychology, and nutrition. You’ll gain hands-on experience using specialist equipment in our Human Performance Centre and sport science labs, and you’ll also have the chance to take part in work placements to apply your learning in real-world settings. The course is accredited by BASES (British Association for Sport and Exercise Sciences) and CIMSPA, which means it meets professional standards and helps strengthen your career prospects after graduation.

In terms of careers, Sports Science can lead to many different paths depending on your interests. Some graduates go on to work as sports scientists, strength and conditioning coaches, performance analysts, or personal trainers. Others move into physiotherapy, teaching, sports management, or health promotion roles. LSBU’s strong career support means you’ll get guidance on placements, networking, and CV building throughout your degree, helping you find the right direction for your skills.

Studying at LSBU also means being in central London, close to sports clubs, health organisations, and fitness centres where many of our students gain valuable experience.

If you’d like to learn more, come along to one of our Open Day on Saturday 15th November. You’ll be able to tour our facilities, meet lecturers, and talk to current sports students about their experiences and future plans.

👉 You can sign up here: LSBU Open Day.
👉 You can also chat with our students through our Unibuddy platform: Chat with our students.

Sports Science opens up a wide range of opportunities, it’s all about finding the area of sport, health, or performance that excites you most. LSBU will support you every step of the way in turning that passion into a successful career.
