Outline and explain two sociological perspectives on the purpose of social policy in society
One sociological perspective on the purpose of social policies is the functionalist perspective. They believe that social policies are needed in order to maintain stability in society. They do this by collecting quantitative data which assists in the social policies like crime rates etc. For example Durkheim’s study on suicide gave great insight in mental health and welfare systems, which helps social policies to create policies to tackle these issues.

Another sociological perspective on the purpose of social policy in society is that it creates a dependancy culture. New Right believe that social policies like benefit increases a culture of dependancy on the state. Murray states that the state should promote more traditional policies and get rid of benefits to reduce the increase of lone-parent families, therefore decreasing the culture dependancy, therefore believe that social policy is bad and should be removed.
