unsure of whether i will be doing a placement year or not

i am currently in the 2nd year of my course and i’m still looking for a year long placement for next year. i applied for student finance and said i’ll be doing a placement next year but i don’t have a confirmation letter yet because i don’t have a placement yet (probably not very smart of me). because you’re only eligible for the minimum maintenance loan for a placement year, they didn’t ask for supporting evidence from my parents. usually i am eligible for the maximum student loan, and i need proof of this to apply for cheaper student accommodation through my uni, and i can’t apply until i have my student finance application approved. if i don’t apply soon there’s no guarantee that i will get a room so i will have to find somewhere i can barely afford. i tried to change my application online, but even if i change to the 3 year course (no placement) it says i have to post a form to be assessed based on household income, which will take at least 6 weeks. would it be better to call and cancel my application altogether and start again, and apply for the 3 year course based on my household income so i get my normal maintenance loan, and if i end up getting a placement i change my application? or will it still take 6 weeks so i’m better off just sending the form and waiting? i’m just stressed because last year my sfe application was delayed so i was waitlisted for accommodation and wasn’t approved until the end of august, and i don’t want to have a repeat of that this year :frown:

Hi there, it would be much easier and quicker to complete the form to request this be updated. The estimated timescale for this would be 9 working days. Thanks, Stephen.

hello,

unfortunately i did not see this message and in a panic i decided to cancel my application and apply for the 3 year course instead. however i ended up finding a placement but i am still waiting for the confirmation letter. my parents sent their supporting financial information on the 20th of may but my account still says processing application. i was wondering whether this whole ordeal has caused my application to be delayed as i thought i would have my letter of entitlement by now based on the estimated timescale? (to further add to the confusion i am currently enrolled on the 4 year course with a year abroad, but i have decided to do a placement year instead.)

secondly, since i have found a placement, i would need to update my application back to the 4 year course. i understand that i would therefore only be entitled to the minimum maintenance loan, so would i receive a new letter of entitlement after i update my information?

Hi there, if your application is still within the review process at present, I would advise to make the change to the 4 year course with the placement, as this can be updated at the same time (of the current review). Once completed, we can issue your award letter with the updated, correct information. If the application had completed under the latest changes, then this will take an estimated 12 working days for to update, once received. Thanks, Stephen.
