Overpayment deferral

Hello,

I attended university last academic year (24/25) and dropped out relatively early due to course dissatisfaction. I’m due to start a new course in September this year.

Due to this I had an overpayment of £2100. This has been deducted from my new 2025 application but due to this I’m now unable to afford rent in my new university city.

Is there a way to defer the overpayment until I’m in a better financial situation? I can’t apply for accommodation until I know if it’s been deferred and my university can only guarantee spaces up until June.

Hi there, students can request a deferment of the overpayment for the duration of the academic year, however we would be requiring evidence to be submitted for to request the deferment, however the Financial Hardship Team will only consider deferring any overpayment 6 weeks before the start of the new academic year. Thanks, Stephen.

Hi,

I was told on the SLC Livechat that there’s a form I can submit now to defer the overpayment. Is this incorrect?

If so is there nothing I can do now? I can’t sign for accommodation or anything until I know what I will be at financially.

Hi there,

If taking the overpayment from your future finance will put you in financial difficulty and you have evidence to prove this, you can apply for financial hardship. You would need to contact us to request the form to be sent to you and return this with your last 3 months bank statements for all accounts in your name. It's not guaranteed, the team will review and confirm if its accepted or not. It's also correct we can't defer it till 6 weeks before the start of the new academic year.

Once received, it's currently taking 10 working days for the team to review, but overall may take 2-3 weeks if the team need to ask for further evidence.

Thanks,
Claire
