Should we stop fining parents for taking children on holiday during term time?

Parents who take their children on holiday during term time face being fined. But some parents still do it for various reasons.
Should we stop fining parents for taking their children on holiday during term time?

I think we should stop fining parents (as long as their kids have good attendance).
The kids can gain a lot from a holiday (seeing new countries or areas of the UK, learning about different places/cultures etc, learning geography stuff etc etc).
The prices of holidays during the school holidays is a lot more expensive. Some parents simply cannot afford this.
Some parents are limited in when they can get time off work (depending on what jobs they do). They may only be able to get time off in term time.
Some children who are either autistic or have other issues (such as ADHD etc) may not cope with holidays in school holidays with the places being a lot busier, crowded etc.
Im sure theres more i can think of.

Nope unless it’s for emergency or family reasons (like it is for me right now) to the point where the family can provide evidence of this.

Holidays are set in stone, follow the calendar or ask for time off and provide evidence (and hope that the school won’t be as thick and callous as my university and workplace are because unfortunately not everyone has common sense). Other than that, I don’t have sympathy for the parents here.

That being said the UK needs to stop having an irrational black and white obsession with attendance (the percentage).

I agree with you.

Going on holiday during term time was never an issue when I was at school. Maybe a cap in the number of days you can take off in term time would be more sensible.
