The open university

Can I become a teacher through an open university degree? I’m wanting to study geography and environmental science and then complete a pgce to become a teacher, is the open university geog and env science degree classed as the same as a normal degree and will I be able to go my pgce year as normal and become a teacher? I’m worried schools won’t see the open uni as as good as other in person ones

The Open University is just as respected and in many cases, more respected by employers than a more "traditional" university. This is because employers will love the fact that you worked hard off of your own back! I'm studying with the OU and I love it. What matters most is if the course you want to do is accredited, which the BSc (Hons) Geography and Environmental Science is, its accreditations come from CIWEM and the IES. I am a member of the IES and the resources the Institue provide me are FANTASTIC!!!! You can do a PGCE with an OU degree. I wish you the best of luck! I hope this helps

Hi @peachapple34

You’ve already had a very helpful response from @Vyshto Andeddu so I won't add too much more.

To apply for teacher training you need the qualifications explained here: Qualifications you need to teach

Teacher training providers will want to know that a candidate has a strong knowledge of the subject they’re applying to teach and it is the content of the degree that is the important bit.

If you want to know more about eligibility for teacher training, you can sign up for an adviser here: Explore Teaching Advisers

The Explore Teaching Advisers are part of the Get Into Teaching service and we offer free, bespoke, 1:1 support to anyone considering training to teach.

I hope that helps!
