Anxiety stuttering

Around others I stutter so much and I become really anxious in situations where I know I will have to speak. My throat tightens and my chest gets really heavy and my heart starts to beat very fast, it’s hard to swallow and I have to literally gulp every swallow of spit. Every time I talk to others I stutter so much and my brain just goes blank like I have no personality around others bc I’m so anxious….i have dealt with this my whole life and I used to be very anxious about being seen, about being seen do anything being seen just I guess live? I’m not scared about being seen anymore in fact I like it but everything else has still stayed…

With family and my boyfriend I’m fine, there’s very little stuttering and I am 100% myself, I’m funny and I have a personality. I need to see someone one to one regularly for weeks to months for me to be able to be myself and not stutter…why?? How can I fix this because I’m at a point in my life where it is ruining my life.

Sort your anxiety out, hopefully that will fix the stutter and mind going blank 🙂

Hi there, thank you for your message and patience. I am really sorry to hear that you are going through this and I hope you find ways to overcome this. Being an anxious person, I can understand how you are feeling to an extent and will give you some advice that will hopefully help.

Acknowledging and asking for advice is a great start and is something to look at in a positive light. So well done for making the first step in getting the help you need. Have you spoke to your gp about this? If not, I would recommend getting some professional advice to get the best help. Speaking to people about my worries and anxiety really helped me, you could do this with your family/boyfriend or anyone you are most comfortable with. Journaling also helped me a lot! It's a great way to reflect on your day, your anxiety and figure out the common factor within your days that make you anxious. It may seem frightening but putting yourself out there and doing things which are outside your comfort zone, is a great way to overcome fears and anxiety. But, you can now also self refer your self for talking therapy through the NHS, which may be an option for you and is something I would recommend.

Here, at the University of Central Lancashire, we take wellbeing and mental health really seriously. We ranked third in the UK for mental health support in the first ever University Mental Health League Table (2022). Universities offer so much support from career support to wellbeing support so if you are going to university, you will have support and definitely not be alone.

What mental health and wellbeing support is available?

Daily drop-in, no appointment needed (weekdays)

Free counselling service

Access to Mental Health and Wellbeing Advisors

Wellbeing workshops

Signposting and referrals to specialist external services

Student Wellbeing Toolkit

Oasis Faith and Spirituality Centre

Let me know if you have any questions 🙂

Best of luck, ^Zac

Hi there Pink CC,

I'm sorry to hear you've been feeling this way, but its great that you're better from some of your difficulties. I agree that taking steps to ease your general anxiety will help with your stuttering. Like you, I stammer when I am nervous and I too end up feeling all the more anxious when it happens, but you definitely not alone in this.

Something I found helped my anxiety or at least re-focussed my mind from feeling afraid was take my train of thoughts from my mind to my feet - try to feel the tread of your feet on the ground. If you are walking, observe your gait and count your steps until you reach 100. If you still find your mind is racing, try to do the same thing with your breathing. Its a form of lowkey mindfulness which might help stop your anxiety in its tracks and help you feel calmer.

I hope some of this helped, huge best of luck to you for the rest of the year!

Hi there,

I completely understand how you feel and that this must be hard for you.

The first thing I can do is say that at Uni, people really do not mind about things like this. It is so different to school, and people are a lot less judgemental so please try not to worry about this as you will be okay.

I would also say that it is definitely worth talking to someone about this and your anxiety as this might really help you out with this. If you are at Uni, reach out to the wellbeing team if you need someone to talk to, or just the general student support services. They will help you and even if it is just someone to talk to it will be really helpful.

If you are really struggling, it is also a good idea to talk to your gp about how you feel. They will also be there for you and may be able to offer you some more help, so I think this would be a good idea. Try and contact the gp in your Uni city too as they will then be able to help you at Uni.

It sounds like the root cause is your anxiety, so trying to get some help for this should help you out a lot. I understand how you feel about being okay around some people, but not others, but trying to sort your anxiety out should help you out with this.

Another thing you can do is talk to your tutors at uni. If you have a personal tutor, they will be able to help you out with this and they may be able to put things in place for when you have presentations.

Practising talking to people and presentations may help you too. The more exposure or practise you get, the better it will be.

I hope some of this helps,

Hello there!

You are not alone!

Here are some tips that could help:

There are some specific therapies that are specifically helping people who are struggling with the same thing as you.
It could be speech therapy.

Try to seek some support from the people you trust, they could give you new perspectives.

Deep breathing and mindfulness, could help redirect focus from anxiety to the present moment, and calm the nervous system

Remember, seeking help is a sign of strength.
You are not alone!

I hope this helps!

Kind regards,
Reka - Coventry University Student Ambassador

I often have this, too, and in fact, anxiety really interferes with my life. Sometimes it even interferes with life. But I recently discovered Canada Pharmacy Partner and thanks to this resource, I can now find different supplements that really help me fight anxiety. I am sure that it is possible to cope with this, everyone just needs to find their own approach.
