Hi there!
I thought I would answer this as I am a university student so this might help you out.
For me, my student finance is not enough so I have a part time job as well as the loan that I get. My loan covers my rent and bills, but I need the money from my job for food and other spending money!
I try and budget every week so that I know I will have enough money for fun things I want to do, as well as the necessities that I need to buy. At the start of the month, I try and split my money into different pots for fun things, necessities and also rent/bills!
I shop at Aldi which I think helps me out quite a bit and I try to make lunches at home which also is just a little thing which helps me out money wise each week.
I like to be able to do things with my friends and don't like having to say no so I always make sure I try and budget enough each month so I can do this. I'm quite good at not being impulsive with my money though which helps me out a lot!

I doubt many people could afford to live on their student maintenance loan alone if they have rent to pay, unless they are eating nothing but spaghetti hoops on toast for every meal.
