For those of you with late Maths offers and no more offer holder days....?

I'm so torn for my Son now (who is also slightly torn too) as his final o/s offer was Warwick (received today) and throws his decision making into a bit of chaos truth be told.

For context: He was an early applicant, did a Cambridge interview in person and made it to the pool before not being fished. Part of me whilst disappointed 'for him' then was also eternally grateful not to be going through STEP pressure on top of everything else right now :adore: So much respect to those doing that. So if his borderline TMUA would have resulted in a STEP condition we'd have no fuss in our house today, as that would have been out of the question at this late stage. He was ridiculously sick on TMUA day, necessitating a stop via a chemist enroute. Not nerves, genuinely ill. We'd ruled it out mentally as a result.

He has a full house of remaining offers now - Warwick being the last to land :yy:

Of the other 3 other offers Bath was his firm favorite, with Bristol as insurance (we'd discounted Edinburgh). We had a positive experience with Bath from day 1.

Bath is A*A*A (with the only requirement being that Maths has an A*, the other A* can come from either remaining subject). Warwick is also A*A*A but with the difference being the second A* must come from his Further Maths too.

For me, University is both his academic degree alongside any personal health and happiness. I strongly feel he can achieve that at Bath, he does too. As I say, great experience there from day 1.

However, he kinda did really want to have a Warwick offer from the get-go though, he's brilliant at Maths, lives for it, likes to be surrounded by like minded hard working mathematicians... has excelled against all 'lacking school systems' to achieve constantly top grades. His mocks were all brilliant recently and he's just really bloomin lovely  So I want him to go wherever is best for him

I dont know how to help him with his decision making - especially as we no longer have an offer day to attend. It's now a bit of a minefield. Firming Bath and insuring Bristol (one grade lower) was less risky than firming Warwick and insuring Bath (ie if he gets the second A* in the wrong subject).

Firming Warwick, and then getting the A* in the wrong remaining subject but still achieving A*A*A overall and going to Bath then as insurance means no on campus accommodation at Bath and I wouldn't really want him off-campus that first year.

I love the Bath campus, I do know he does too but he had 'remarked' it's a fair bit smaller than the Warwick campus. I never know if a remark from him is a 'big deal' or not. He wants some nightlife but does not need a big city nightlife - i dont think Warwick or Bath are renowned for major nightlife anyway. In fact, i think both levels might be similar in some way... and both quite suited to him.

HOW is anyone now making a decision without having someone face to face at an offer day to speak to?

We were making a similar decision a couple of weeks ago between Warwick, Bath and Durham. Made a little easier in the end because YP wasn’t very impressed by the lecture at the Bath open day. But all options were good ones and it was almost fortuitous that they had something to distinguish them from one another, otherwise I think we’d still be deciding.

In the end went Warwick, Durham and let Bath go. Personally I thought Warwick, Bath was a better combination in terms of reputation etc. but I took a back seat.
If your YP loves Bath then personally I’d say go for it - the difference between W and B is negligible and the year placement is pretty invaluable given the difficulties faced in the job market by so many graduates.
Good luck with whatever you decide x

Yes, wow ... really similar scenario. Thanks for your reply. So we are still in a quandary at home, an offer holder day would really serve us well but not even sure when they'd do one now or even if i could now get my Son to it as A levels start next week.

I was at that Bath offer holders day with my Son - standing eating multiple biscuits during that lecture .

I think part of our issue now is him having visualised himself at Bath thinking a Warwick offer was not in the offing. In January he was 'all about Warwick' and if TMUA day had gone better I dont think we'd even be having as big an issue at home deciding. The placement year at Bath is really well renowned it must be said, and I cant even recall what options were like that at Warwick.

He is currently in the library from 6.30am until 9pm at night lol - making decision making that much more difficult (it feels like he is already living a university life).

My gut tells me if he'd not come home in January thinking he'd blown it ... then Warwick would have been his first choice. He is adept at compartmentalising in way that is astonishing to me.

There is such a huge chance we will be doing Warwick, Bath right now - and that is such a scary prospect. A firm and insurance that both require A*A*A (just different emphasis on placement on one A*). Most people outside of our house would think we were NUTS.

There is a Maths offer holders day on the 17th May at Warwick.

There most certain is one this Saturday which is brilliant except it's just a couple of days before Further Maths A Level first sitting. So not ideal to have disappeared all day Saturday. we might have got away with a morning visit as i'd have just go us up super early and then straight back so he could carry on studying, but the afternoon kinda mucks it up for us that much more as means just too much of the day away.

i’m also a year 13 student who has applied for maths- warwick never gave me an offer or rejection so i withdrew because it was annoying me and the course was not as appealing as my other choices. i have firmed durham and insured edinburgh which is similar to your situation as they are both a*a*a offers but with the 2nd in further maths for durham. i felt it was more sensible than insuring a lower offer as i did very well in both sets of my mocks and i was confident that i can revise well. i would be much happier going to edinburgh instead of my other lower offer which was birmingham, and that’s what decided it for me also- if he doesn’t do as well as expected in exams for whatever reason, clearing is still available and will be fairly decent for maths (i hope! 🙏) good luck to your YP and i’m sure he will be happy wherever )

I really appreciate your answer, yes such a similar choice scenario you had. I think this is where my gut takes me for him too, i just know that ateotd he doesn't want to go to what most people would consider the better insurance option (even though that university is absolutely brilliant). It's kind of the whole thing for him really which is why uni decisions are beyond just the course. My Daughter would have LOVED to have gone to Bristol as she wanted a city uni with the Bristol vibe. That will be wasted on my Son (lol), he likes everything quite matter of fact for him in many ways and the appeal of campus is high for him (with a bit of nightlife on the side). He also likes to run, so I know both Warwick and Bath have running teams (proper tracks etc) and this WILL be important to him as it's how he relaxes away from things.

so i think you've helped me at least here, as in my heart i know he'd rather be selecting from Warick and Bath ateotd.

Thanks
