Is Film and Broadcast Production the right degree for you?

Hi everyone! I’m Finlay, and I’m currently studying Film and Broadcast Production here at Edge Hill University.

If you’re interested in storytelling, visual creativity, and working with industry-standard equipment, I honestly couldn’t recommend this course enough. What I love about it is how hands-on it is from the very start, we’ve been able to work with professional cameras, editing software, and studio setups. It’s not just about theory (though you’ll learn that too), but actually getting stuck in and creating real content, whether that’s short films, documentaries, or studio-based shows.

The tutors are incredibly helpful but still let you take the reins on your work many of them have worked in the industry, so they really know what they’re talking about and support you in building both your skills and confidence. There are also plenty of opportunities to collaborate with others, which makes the course feel creative, challenging, and genuinely fun.

If anyone’s thinking about applying or just wants to know what the course is really like, feel free to ask me anything I’m happy to chat!

Hi 👋 I have a few questions. How many contact hours do you have ? How supportive is the course ? Is the workload manageable ?
On another note what’s it like living in omskirk? Is it easy to make friends? And s there plenty to do ? How about the students union who s there a lot going on ? What are the clubs and societies like?
How about accommodation ? Is it easy to find ? Is it expensive ?
Sorry for the huge amount of questions . Thanks ☺️

Hi @Rocky hockey ,

You have lots of great questions!

For the course-specific things like contact hours, workload and academic support, the best place to get accurate info is the Chat Now feature on the website. If you select your course, you can speak to Finlay, a final-year Film and Broadcast student, who can give you first-hand insight into what it’s actually like.

As a general overview, most courses in the Faculty of Arts and Science have around 10-15 hours (but this can vary per course) and there are lots of support systems in place available on each course and for the wider university.

In terms of living in Ormskirk, it’s a really friendly town with lots to do. There are plenty of shops, cafés and places to eat, as well as nice spots to explore. The Students’ Union is very active and there are loads of societies, regular events, and evening activities like the weekly smartphone quiz, live music nights and Wednesday Socials, so it’s really easy to get involved and meet people.

Accommodation is lovely and all located on campus for first years, which makes everything super convenient. I’d definitely recommend coming to an Open Day or Offer Holder Day so you can look around and see the different options. For second and third year, there’s also lots of student housing available in town. All of the accommodation on campus is affordable and there is the option of Forest Court accommodation which is slightly cheaper so great if you want to save a little bit of money.

Hope this helps! 😊
