Academic misconduct

Just over a month ago I received an email regarding academic misconduct. After a friend got the same email, I realised she had copied my work word for word. I had reasonable belief that she had done her own work, as she would usually go into university and get help from lecturers, and it was out of character for her not to do it herself. I assumed it was a one-off. The day before submission she reassured me she only needed to look over my work to check the structure and see if she had done her right as she claimed she did hers already.

I have screenshots of me sending my work to her, as well as the journal articles I had downloaded and used for the assignment.

More recently, for a different module, she messaged me again begging for my work using the same excuse. She kept reassuring me that she had done hers and suggested we get on a call. I did not share my work this time. I also have screenshots of this.

Can this be used as evidence that she misled me?

Yes: if she's asking for your work on a false pretence and then copying it, that's misleading you into sending her your work. Definitely use that as evidence to clear your name and dont send any more work to her. Hope this helps and best of luck.

You need to be careful as sharing your work with others is still misconduct, even if your friend lied about their reasons for wanting to see it.

I get that I’ll face consequences and take responsibility, but I want to be clear that I never meant to give her my work to cheat. It might sound naive, but I was totally blindsided. She seemed on top of her work, actively going to seminars making notes and told me she was practically done. But, she kept blowing up my phone with calls and made me feel really bad and unreasonably for not sending it. Tbh i should’ve guessed from there.

I never share my work with anyone but the teacher or person marking. This is because of two reasons: people want to copy you because they haven't done it and want you to do the legwork for them, so they could easily get the same grade as you - probably due to jealousy of not being able to achieve as much as you or due to laziness. Another reason is because people give you feedback - sometimes they are jealous of you, so may give you "feedback", which may overall make your grade worse, however, if it is from someone higher up, normally they provide constructive feedback, which is good because it helps you improve - you should receive feedback from reality and not society. If I were you, I would just not lend her my work in the first place - it is my work that has gotten me to the place I am and just because she hasn't done it/ wants to "check", it isn't her role to do so, but going forward, be weary of lending people stuff, because you never know what they'll do with it
