Hi all, My son received the above mark from Swansea uni, today. He's absolutely gutted. Is it worth appealing. Thanks in advance
Appealing for what? He got that result, or are you believing something was systematically unfair. If not then thats his result.
Has he got a final classification yet as some unis do round up grades on boundaries (boundaries differ across unis so you need to check regulations), so he may end up with a first regardless.
Yes the classification said merit but surely a quarter of a percent, would warrant a mark up, that's before the possibility of removing the two lowest marks, which often happen at Swansea Uni xx

You should check the module info clearly around this to see if there is a case, @DataVenia might be able to help dissect the finer details.
It is nearly half a percent out (if your OP is correct) so its not tiny but get why you would want to triple check this.

"For students commencing programmes from September 2023 or January 2024 the following point G15 applies:
An overall mark of 70% or more is required for the whole programme to qualify for a distinction. The overall degree classification shall be calculated based on the mean average of module marks, that are weighted according to their credit value, across the whole programme."
Looking through the regulations generally, I see no mention of rounding being applied, or of any special rules applying to those near the threshold of the next classification.
What I suggest you son does is to carefully double-check that the 69.61% they've calculated is accurate. The regulations say to use the "mean average of module marks", so if he achieved 71.4% in a particular module (for example), check that they haven't used 71%. Also check that when they've weighted each module, they've avoided rounding early. I say this as weightings may not be nice clean percentages: a 30-credit module should be weighed at 30/180, not 16.5 or even 16.667.
If that still yields a result below 70%, then I think he just needs to accept the merit, unfortunately.
They need to draw the line somewhere. If they implemented a rule whereby they rounded to the nearest integer, then someone who achieved 69.49% would be just as aggrieved at missing out on a rounded 70% by just 0.01%.
